    Abstract
Describes the development, funding and staffing of the Information Literacy Program (ILP) at the Mantor Library at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF). The programme aims at helping both UMF students and community patrons to understand better how and where to look for information. Instruction takes place in an electronic classroom equipped with 21 computers running campus-standard Web-browsers and word processing; the instructor's station can control all of the computers in the classroom, or the instructor may pass or share control with students. Discusses issues relating to campus politics, the positioning of the programme in the college experience, the necessity of teaching evaluation skills, and the programme's impact on reference services. gives advice to other libraries considering a similar project

    Abstract
Computers are having a tremendous impact on chemical research and the teaching of chemistry. This situation in turn is fostering advances in chemical information science and technology (chemical informatics). Technological changes have caused re-examination of the programme to train chemical information specialists at Indiana University, resulting in the modification of existing courses and the creation of new courses and degree options. Describes plans for their implementation and for the establishment of joint industry-academic research projects

    Abstract
This article provides analyses, describes dilemmas, and suggests way forwards in the teaching of knowledge organization (KO). The general assumption of the article is that theoretical problems in KO must be the point of departure for teaching KO. Section 2 addresses the teaching of practical, applied and professional KO, focusing on learning about specific knowledge organization systems (KOS), specific standards, and specific methods for organizing knowledge, but provides arguments for not isolating these aspects from theoretical issues. Section 3 is about teaching theoretical and academic KO, in which the focus is on examining the bases on which KOSs and knowledge organization processes such as classifying and indexing are founded. This basically concerns concepts and conceptual relations and should not be based on prejudices about the superiority of either humans or computers for KO. Section 4 is about the study of education in KO, which is considered important because it is about how the field is monitoring itself and about how it should be shaping its own future. Section 5 is about the role of the ISKO Encyclopedia of Knowledge Organization in education of KO, emphasizing the need for an interdisciplinary source that may help improve the conceptual clarity in the field. The conclusion suggests some specific recommendations for curricula in KO based on the author's view of KO.

    Abstract
The author's experiences as a master's and doctoral student at the University of California at Berkeley School of Library and Information Studies during a formative period in the history of information science, 1966-71, are described. The relationship between documentation and information science as experienced in that program is discussed, as well as the various influences, both social and intellectual, that shaped the author's understanding of information science at that time.

    Abstract
This paper briefly traces the history of library education in India and examines the status of bibliographic organization and control in the country as a major factor influencing the nature and content of courses in knowledge organization. The two basic documents from the University Grants Commission - the first one issued in 1965 and the recent one in 2001 - that have influenced university level course contents have been examined. Finally, the nature of changes that are being brought about in recent years in some universities has been highlighted.

    Abstract
The traditional library and information science (LIS) curriculum for organization of information assumes a cataloging paradigm that is built on the concepts and theories developed throughout the history of library cataloging as well as practical knowledge and skills of applying current standards and systems developed specifically for practice in cataloging. Advocates for LIS curriculum reform point out, however, that this cataloging paradigm must be replaced by knowledge of resources and systems management in order to equip LIS graduates with the knowledge and skills needed for an information society. By comparing the traditional and nontraditional curricula in the area of organization of information, this paper proposes a paradigm for organization of information in which information is defined in the context of five attributes and cataloging is perceived as a mode of organizational behavior. Some implications of this paradigm on the core curriculum for organization of information are suggested

    Abstract
This paper presents a seminar project held in the summer of 2004 at the Institute of Library Science at Humboldt University, Berlin. The result of the seminar was a book, compiled and edited by students, which contained a series of essays from professional librarians. Titled Library Science - quo vadis?, the book discusses the history, current position and the future of library science, not only in Germany, but also in other European countries and the USA. It shows that the discipline of library science is not limited to the physical aspects of managing books stacked on shelves, but that in the age of the information society, libraries play a key role in the distribution, protection, management and theories of information and knowledge.
