    Abstract
Considers the disciplines important for the computing needs of humanities scholars; text based studies (literature in all languages and subjects such as history, philosophy and theology); image and artefact based studies (archeaology; art history; art film and media studies); linguistic studies (the study of all languages, and modern linguistics); and sound based studies (music and spoken corpora). Discusses the technologies needed to apply computers to these disciplines and reviews: current network use by humanities scholars; network publishing; the electronic artefact; and networks and humanities teaching

    Abstract

    Abstract
The Three Rivers Free-Net (TRFN) is a free community-based computer network sponsored and run by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. TRFN is designed to link the people of southwestern Pennsylvania to information and resources by bringing local nonprofit and government organizations onto the Web and by linking to selected global sites of interest to the local community. Outlines the history of the project, describes the TRFN infrastructure and provides a tour of the Web site. Discusses the reasons for the success of the TRFN project which include library affiliation, collaboration with other organizations, ongoing evaluation of the service's effectiveness, and training of volunteers. Plans for future additions include a community calendar, a search engine, and a geographic information system for the purpose of enhancing local content

    Abstract
The widespread adoption of Internet protocols has made it easier for libraries to link together in consortia and pool their resources effectively. Describes three Web sites which provide information of interest to librarians looking to form a consortium. The Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries' (CARL) homepage provides a link to a brief history of the consortium, its strategic plan and its publications. The World wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international industry consortium, founded in October 1994 to develop common protocols that will promote the evolution of the Web and guarantee its interoperability. W3C provides information about the Web for developers and users. The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) is a project committed to making the Web accessible to people with disabilities and is of interest to librarians since it fits their own mission of filling ht einformation needs of all users

    Abstract
Examines some of the advanced tools, techniques, methods and standards related to the Internet and WWW which consist of hybrids of documents and software, called 'document program hybrids'. Early Internet systems were based on having documents on one side and software on the other, neatly separated, apart from one another and without much interaction, so that the static document can also exist without computers and networks. Documentation program hybrids blur this classical distinction and all components are integrated, interwoven and exist in synergy with each other. Illustrates the techniques with particular reference to practical examples, including: dara collections and dedicated software; advanced HTML features on the WWW, multimedia viewer and plug in software for Internet and WWW browsers; VRML; interaction through a Web server with other servers and with instruments; adaptive hypertext provided by the server; 'webbots' or 'knowbots' or 'searchbots' or 'metasearch engines' or intelligent software agents; Sun's Java; Microsoft's ActiveX; program scripts for HTML and Web browsers; cookies; and Internet push technology with Webcasting channels

    Abstract
Creates an open, metadata aware system for distributed, collaborative WWW indexing. The system has 3 main components: a harvester (for collecting information), a database (for making the collection searchable), and a user interface (for making the information available). all components can be distributed across networked computers, thus supporting scalability. The system is metadata aware and thus allows searches on several fields including title, document author and URL. Nordic Web Index (NWI) is an application using this system to create a regional Nordic Web-indexing service. NWI is built using 5 collaborating service points within the Nordic countries. The NWI databases can be used to build additional services

    Abstract
Linking isolated local data bases requires protocols to enable dissimilar computers to communicate. This connection allows access to remote databases on any computer with an Internet connection. Describes interactive databases which are further classified as OPACs, CWIS (Campuswide Information systems), BBS (Bulletin Board Systems), miscellaneous services, and WAIS (Wide Area Information Services)
