    Abstract
    Amerikanische Bibliotheken sind im Internet nicht nur durch ihre Kataloge präsent, sondern bieten mit Digital Reference weitere Informationsdienstleistungen in diesem Medium an. Auskunft per E-Mail, Web-Formular und Chat sowie schließlich via Web Contact Center markieren die bisherigen Entwicklungsstufen. Web Contact Center wurden ursprünglich im Kontext von E-Commerce entwickelt. Sie umfassen eine Vielzahl von kommunikativen und kollaborativen Tools. Bibliotheken tragen damit der veränderten Medienkultur Rechnung und können den Herausforderungen der Informationsgesellschaft gerecht werden.

    Abstract
    Reports results of a study to monitor information activities of selected UK public libraries and special libraries and to collect enquiry data from 7 different information services (2 public reference libraries; 2 public lending libraries; a tourist information centre; and 2 special libraries). Data was categorized according to length of answer, mode of enquiring; type of enquiry; and subject of enquiry. Results indicated that the special libraries had longer enquiries and received more by telephone, fax transmission and letter than the public libraries. Furthermore, they made most use of computerized information services. Business and commerce enquiries were most freqeuntly asked at the public reference libraries. Answering community information and children's enquiries were the common tasks of public lending libraries. Minimal overlap accured in the provision of tourist information

    Abstract
    Purpose - This paper seeks to understand how users determine credibility in the internet environment from a conceptual level and the implications of these new methods of credibility determination on internet tools (primarily software) and services. Design/methodology/approach - The author first examines the underlying reasons for increased dependence on the internet for information, using electronic commerce as a starting point. The central concept of "information self-sufficiency" is introduced and then examined through the lens of the internet and conversation theory. Findings - The author finds that users are shifting from more traditional "authority" methods of credibility determination, where users cede determinations to trusted third parties, to a "reliability" approach where users seek commonalities and coherence among multiple information sources. This has led to an increased pressure for participation and openness at all levels of the internet. Research limitations/implications - Studies on users and credibility must better account for often invisible technical factors. Practical implications - Libraries must take into account a greater need for participation and technical fluency when dealing with patrons, particularly in information literacy programs and instruction. Originality/value - This paper presents a large-scale conceptual approach to credibility on the internet. It seeks to inform current approaches to the subject nested in communications and instruction with the unique technical environment of the internet.

    Abstract
    Was haben Videos, CD-ROM, Bücher, Musik-CDs, Zeitungen, DVDs, Zeitschriften, Noten, Karten und Spiele gemeinsam? Richtig: alle diese Medien gehören zum Standardangebot einer Öffentlichen Bibliothek. Aber noch eine weitere Gemeinsamkeit gibt es: die auf diese Weise angebotenen Inhalte findet man mittlerweile - losgelöst von ihrer physikalischen Form - auch im Internet! Das Internet als Distributionsmedium für Texte, Bilder, Töne, Filme macht den herkömmlichen Medien starke Konkurrenz und entwickelt sich zum alles umfassenden Vertriebskanal. Zwei Firmenübernahmen der letzten Monate zeugen beispielhaft von der zu erwartenden breiten Medienkonvergenz: Das Internetportal Yahoo! übernimmt das traditionsreiche Medienunternehmen Time Warner und die spanische Telefonica den Soap- und Gameshow-Produzenten Endemol, der verstärkt für das Web produzieren soll. Aber auch ohne Internetfernsehen sind Online-Banking, Reisebuchungen, Inforniationssuche, Chatten, E-Mailen, Surfen, Versteigerungen und elektronischer Einkauf für viele bereits Alltag. Fast ein Viertel der Deutschen sind schon online, weltweit sollen es bereits 300 Millionen Menschen sein 1 - Tendenz exponenziell steigend, Zwar ist momentan der Vertrieb von kostenpflichtigen Inhalten über das Weh für die breite Bevölkerung noch die Ausnahme, doch dies wird sich bald ändern. Schon macht das Schlagwort vom I-Commerce die Runde. Die digitale Signatur verspricht Rechtssicherheit beim elektronischen Einkaufsbummel und auch Kleinbeträge können auf komfortable Weise automatisch abgebucht werden. Für das Pay-per-ViewGeschäft mit Dokumenten bietet beispielsweise die Deutsche Telekom mittlerweile einen "Click & Pay"-Service an, der eine problemlose Abrechnung von Nutzungsentgelten über die Telefonrechnung ermöglicht. Wie ist angesichts der oft beschworenen "digitalen Revolution" die Rolle der Bibliotheken einzuschätzen? Sie bieten immerhin einen sorgfältig ausgewählten Medienbestand, sind gut sortiert, der Kunde wird persönlich betreut und konkurrenzlos preisgünstig ist es auch
