Abstract: Image content opens up exciting possibilities for stand-alone media, distributed networks, online networks, and on-site publishing from information systems for use by the general public, for research, collection management, education and distance learning. Dealing with some of the effects of multimedia for those involved in the conventional publishing chain. Among the aspects dealt with are the rival formats for distribution and playback; how publishers are apporaching multimedia, and software companies approaching publishing; multimedia music; ownership copyright; and networking implications. From incomplete networks, questions of quality control and copyright, to unified pricing policies, the route to fully electronic scientific communication has many pitfalls. However, change is inevitable, and a quick tour of the models currently being investigated is provided. These include researchers' own electronic publishing ventures. OCLC/AAAS electronic journal 'Current clinical trials', 'IEE's Electronics letters', American Chemical Society (ACS) projects with and without graphics, Elsevier's TULIP (The University Licensing Programme) project to supply 42 materials science journals in electronic form, and the Institute of Physics Publishing future developments including the SuperJournal demonstration project on the SuperJanet network

Abstract

The publication of scholarly works in a networked electronic environment presents opportunities for solving problems with printed services. At the same time, copyright developed primarily for printed works, has been used to create stumbling blocks both for faculty authors and their institutions. This has accurred because publishers have required a transfer of copyright as a quid pro quo for publication. New models of copyright ownership and management can be developed for electronic publishing of scholarly works and research uses, and ultimately will reduce costs to universities which currently must repurchase faculty produced works from commercial publishers

Abstract

Explores some of the practical difficulties associated with the management information as a commodity, and sketches a framework in which to address the problem in the context of electronic publishing. The strategy is based on the integration of 2 groups of technologies, collectively refereed to as 'secure SGML' which merges the platform-independent data representation offered by the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and related standards with the privacy and authentication functions offered by recent advances in key cryptography. This scheme allows implementation of a licensing strategy, thereby providing a means of addressing problematic copyright and public policy issues associated with digital media. Libraries can play a key role in the installation and maintenance of the infrastructure required to support new forms of information transaction

Abstract

Raises a number of questions concerning current issues and problems in publishing and electrocopying in the academic field. Considers the influence of the Internet, the role of publishers in the future academic market, and how copyright law might develop as a result of changes in the digital world. Scholarly authors may in fact be better renumerated without publishers: universities will become Internet publishers. In the USA, 16 research institutes and libraries have formed the Digital Library Federation, and various models for scholarly communication in the electronic age are under discussion, aimed at providing appropriate methods of copyright clearance and renumeration mechanisms

Abstract

There is much interest at present in electronic publishing and electronic libraries. The vast bulk of material in libraries today is not held in electronic format. For electronic libraries to flourish, methods of converting the existing corpus of material to electronic format must be found. This paper emphasises the problems that may be encountered in the digitisation process and pays attention to the intended use of the digitised material. There is a list of 5 areas, scanner resolution and design, grey scale and colour content of the original material and speed of scanning, for special consideration. The problems of indexing and copyright are considered briefly
