- In the Netherlands the first 'Library-phone' service to answer questions from the general public by phone was started by Friesland Central Library Service in 1986. 7 provincial authorities currently provide library-phone services. A survey of the 7 services showed some variation in answers provided and in time taken to provide an answer. In some instances library-phone staff had failed to use up-to-date sources. However, in general all questions were answered satisfactorily

- Abstract
- For literature searchers who create extensive bibliographies, special software is available. Among the most popular of these packages is ProCite from Research Information Systems. The system uses workforms with predefined fields for author, title etc. Through its BilioLink conversion program ProCite enables data to be downloaded from other files. Advantages of the package are its ease of use and links to WWW applications. However, index browsing is clumsy and there is little control over input errors

- Abstract
- In the last 10 years a number of libraries in the Netherlands have developed akternative shelf arrangements to the standard SISO system. A survey undertaken at Felde children's library following the implementation of an alternative arrangement showed that children had been unaware of the change. In 1989 the Nederlands Bibliothekk en Lektuur Centrum (Dutch Centre for Libraries and Reading) began developing a system based on trials at 15 libraries. Further implementations of the system should take account of developments with automated catalogues

- Abstract
- In the Netherlands the Gemeenschappelijke Onderwerps Ontsluiting (Standard Subject Indexing) schedules were developed for libraries using the national online catalogue. At Leiden University's Institute voor Oost-Europees Recht en Ruslandkunde use of both UDC and GOO schedules enabled a comparison to be made of the systems. A study of approx. 1.400 titles showed that GOO was more effective in retrieving relevant documents, whereas UDC was more suited for compiling subject bibliographies. The best of both schemes should be combined for optimal retrieval

- Although several attempts have been made to devise simplified shelf arrangements for children, little consideration has been given to developing a simplified automated library catalogue. At Denver Public Library in the USA a catalogue has been devised enabling users to search via graphical symbols. Results of research into children's use of library catalogues was used as a basis for creating the system. - Abstract
- Existing classification systems require constant expansion to accomodate new subject fields, while subject indexing techniques fail to display the relationship of subjects. Relational databases are currently being developed which will guide users through the differing levels of subjects, using the 'cartography of science'. Such developments will enable librarians to play a more interactive role in information retrieval and will have far-reaching consequences on the design of subject-indexing systems

- Abstract
- The Nationale Raad voor de Volksgezondheid contains a medium sized library with 800-1.000 new acquisitions each year and 220 periodical subscriptions. A study of commercially available automated catalogue systems showed that none met the needs of library users. After an unsuccessful attempt to develop a catalogue using Word Perfect word processing package a program was written using Turbo Pascal software to provide a user friendly catalogue with adequate help screens and Dutch language commands. The system uses little disc space and offers a 10 second response time. At present the catalogue contains books and periodical articles added in 1991-92. Plans are in hand to add material back to Jan 1990

- In 1989 Brabant Catholic University was the first university in the Netherlands to provide an online campus information service. Since that date other universities in the Netherlands have inaugurated systems providing a wide range of information services, including access to the respective library's catalogues. Ease of use varies from system to system and there is an urgent need to standardize system commands. Libraries can provide useful help in creating such services. - To assist users with accessing the growing range of information sources Twente University Library in the Netherlands has developed OBIS (Online Bibliotheek Informatie Systeem / Online Library Information System). OBIS provides access to online databases and a range of library catalogues, including Twente's. However, a survey of staff in the Department of Applied Education and Information Science Studies showed that library services were underused. The survey showed that users relied heavily on printed information and contacts with colleagues. To overcome this a user education programme is currently being developed

- Contribution to thematic issue of art libraries in the Netherlands. Visual images are now widely recognised as an importatnt resource for the historical research. To improve access to collections of such material H. van de Wal developed ICONCLASS in the Netherlands. With some 150.000 controlled indexing terms the scheme is hierarchical and easy to use. In response to requests a version of ICONCLASS has been developed for use in automated systems. - Amstelveen Public Library in the Netherlands introduced the online Kid's Catalog in 1997 to enable young users to access the library's catalogue. The system was developed in the United States and has been translated into Dutch for use in Amstelveen. The system enables users to access the catalogue through a menu of icons or by typing in author, title and subject headings. The system can recognise typing errors and offer corrected headings. - In the Netherlands the SISO general classification scheme is criticised by staff of small libraries as too user hostile, and by staff in larger libraries, as lacking detailed subject divisions. To answer such criticism the Nederlands Bibliotheek en Lektuur Centrum has set up a Committee to examine the future of SISO. - At Limburg Provincial Central Library and Information Service in the Netherlands the online public catalogue has been replaced by a new system, Foundation. The OPAC network was an automated version of the card catalogue, whereas Foundation has been developed entirely from scratch. The system runs on Windows software and assists even inexperienced users to formulate suitable search strategies. The system accepts online catalogue records from other sources and has attracted considerable intersts from several areas, including the publishing industry

- Describes the construction of a thematic catalogue at the Central Public Library in Ghent, Belgium, which was aimed at providing access to the subjects in the fiction collection for the benefit of users at every level of development. No thematic expansion is considered necessary within general categories such as detective stories and science fiction where as thematic expansion is required within specific categories such as travel literature.
