    Abstract
The history of encyclopedias and wholly new forms of encyclopedias are briefly reviewed. The possibilities and problems that hypertext presents as a basis for new forms of encyclopedias are explored. The capabilities of current systems, both experimental and commercially available, are outlined, focusing on new possibilities for authoring and design and for reading the retrieval. Examples of applications already making use of hypertext are given.

    Abstract
The classification work of 26 librarians and 9 students was studied by a thinking aloud method. The structure of their work was analysed into 2 parts that corresond with the stages presented in the ISO standard 5963. Documents were analysed by different concepts of "aboutness". Identification of the principal concepts present in the subject has led into a hypothesis about 3 conceptual systems. Expressing the concepts in terms of classification systems was found to be difficult with UDC because of many unclear synonyms in different parts of the schedules.

    Abstract
The use of interactive videodiscs for preserving, presenting and retrieving pictorial collections in Australia was pioneered at the New South Wales Government Printing Office, Sydney. This project has now stored some 200.000 historical photographs on interactive videodisc, associated with sophisticated microcomputer data bases using the specially developed Just Image software. Videodisc systems to retrieve pictorial material are being used to preserve and present the pictorial collections of various Australian libraries and museums, and standards for the description and indexing of photographs are being developed.

    Abstract
The literature of psychology, library science, management, computer science, and systems engineering is reviewed and integrated into an overall perspective of human information seeking and the design of information systems. The nature of information seeking is considered in terms of its role in decision making and problem solving, the dynamics of the process, and the value of information. Discussions of human information seeking focus on basic psychological studies, effects of cognitive style, and models of human behavior. Design issues considered include attributes of information systems, analysis of information needs, aids for information seeking, and evaluation of information systems

    Abstract
Historically, library automation has focused attention on the automation of internal library processes, such as cataloging; however, a new generation of library automation systems intended for direct use by library patrons is emerging. These public-access computer systems are categorized and described. The types of public-access computer systems are: (1) catalog information systems, (2) electronic information systems, (3) information presentation systems, (4) instructional systems, (5) consultation systems, (6) information service and delivery systems, (7) conferencing systems, (8) integrative systems, and (9) end-user computing facilities. To be effective, these computer-based systems must be integrated with the traditional collections and services of libraries

    Abstract
Discusses the origins of hybrid classification systems, what characteristics these systems have or should have, and the advantages and disadvantages of such systems over other classification or indexing systems. The structure of technological information in patents and the basic pattern of description therein is reviewed briefly, and the document classification and indexing component of hybrid systems analysed.

    Abstract
This paper examines the relevance of the expert systems approach to information retrieval. First, the purpose and nature of expert systems are outlined, and it is argued that only in domains with relatively limited and clear-cut rule-sets will such systems be viable in the near future. The expert systems approach is then related to the provision of interfaces for OPACs and IR systems. Intermediary systems, designed to clarify through dialogue the terms of a client's information need, are described, and the prospects for such systems are discussed. It is argued that relatively straightforward rule-sets should suffice, and that useful systems may therefore be available fairly soon. Since they could facilitate access to general as well as to specialised information, the potential demand for such systems would seem to be enormous
