    Abstract
This book addresses RDA along with traditional examples of cataloguing like MARC, MODS, and Dublin Core. Streaming video, Internet sites, dual-disc DVDs, blogs and listservs are just some of the rapidly emerging, and often complicated, new resources covered in this current, easy-to-follow manual. Separate chapters are dedicated to each non-print and e-resource format, and include corresponding examples to help demonstrate practical implementation of these critical new skills. A companion CD-ROM contains fully-worked out examples, models and illustrations, and acts as an important visual guide to help reinforce key concepts. In addition, a companion website provides updates on changes in RDA and other cataloguing resources and practices; links to presentations, blog posts, etc; and a means to contact the authors with questions and feedback.

    Abstract
The authors describe the creation of online series authority records on the University of Florida Libraries' NOTIS-based LUIS system. It is an original method that uses serial bibliographic records as a basis for series authority records. We hope that our explanation of this pioneering method will be useful in varying degrees to other libraries attempting to convert their series authorities to an online environment. We also hope that this paper will prompt discussion among catalogers about series authorities in the online environment.

    Abstract
Considers issues surrounding cataloguing electronic resources on the MELVYL online system at the University of California, USA. Considers implications of the differences between online and paper versions of serials, difficulties in providing precises information on holdings of full text articles, cataloguing rules changes that are need to integrate MARC formats, adding URLs as a subfield, archiving electronic journals and restricting access to electronic materials

    Abstract
The paper performs a thought experiment on the concept of a record based on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records and library system functions, and concludes that if we want to develop a functional bibliographic record we need to do it within the context of a flexible, functional library systems record structure. The article suggests a new way to look at the library systems record that would allow libraries to move forward in terms of technology but also in terms of serving library users.

    Abstract
Describes the origins of the CATaloguing and Retrieval of Information Over Network Applications (CATRIONA) Study in the BUBL Subject Tree service and nots its aims: to investigate the requirements for developing procedures and applications for cataloguing and retrieval of networked resources (particularly via the Internet); and to explore the feasibility of a collaborative project to develop and integrate them with existing library systems. The project established that a distributed catalogue of networked resources integrated with standard Z39.50 library system OPAC interfaces with information on hard copy resources is already a practical proposition at a basic level. Notes that at least one Z30.50 OPAC client can searcg remote Z39.50 OPACs, retrieve USMARC records with URLs in MARC field 856

    Abstract
This article discusses the training of catalog librarians in Germany and Austria. First, the various library careers and degrees are described; then the various types of library schools and the varying educational content of different degree programs are described, along with continuing education programs in both countries. Typical job categories in German and Austrian libraries are described in terms of the qualification levels required in each category. Since the question of whether to retain the current official cataloguing code is now a subject of intense debate (with a potentially significant impact on library education,) the main points of that debate are outlined here. Mention is made of the manuals and textbooks currently used in cataloguing courses.

    Abstract
Discusses the process of creating bibliographic and cataloguing standards after the implementation of the VTLS (Virginia Tech Library System) in major Polish academic libraries. Examines the adoption of the USMARC format as standard for the transfer of bibliographic data in Poland and the editorial work of VTLS libraries resulting in publication of USMARC format manuals in Polish libraries. Studies the question of authority control, with special attention given to the creation of the CKHW (a common online authority database), which includes authority records for series, uniform titles, personal, corporate, geographic names and topical subject headings. Discusses the development of the KABA thesaurus, which is influenced by the RAMEAU and LoC subject indexing systems and examines the structure of subject authority MARC records, as used by Polish libraries. Considers the effect of the VTLS implementation upon the establishment of national and local library consortia in Poland

    Abstract
The fundamental principle of order in the library catalogue is the authorship principle, which serves as the organizing node of an alphabetico-classed system, in which "texts" of "works" are organized first alphabetically by uniform title of the progenitor work and then are subarranged using titles for variant instantiations, under the heading for an "author." We analyze case studies of entries from (1) the first documented imperial library catalogue, the Seven Epitomes (Qilue [??]), in China; (2) Abelard's Works, which featured prominently in the 1848 testimony of Antonio Panizzi; and (3) The French Chef and the large family of instantiated works associated with it. Our analysis shows that the catalogue typically contains many large superwork sets. A more pragmatic approach to the design of catalogues is to array descriptions of resources in relation to the superwork sets to which they might belong. In all cases, a multidimensional faceted arrangement incorporating ideational nodes from the universe of recorded knowledge holds promise for greatly enhanced retrieval capability.

    Abstract
From a historical perspective, one could consider the modern library catalog to be that bibliographical apparatus that stretches at least from Thomas Hyde's catalog for the Bodleian Library at Oxford to the near present. Mai and other recent authors have suggested postmodern approaches to knowledge organization. In these, we realize that there is no single and unique order of knowledge or documents but rather there are many appropriate orders, all of them contextually dependent. Works (oeuvres, opera, Werke, etc.), as are musical works, literary works, works of art, etc., are and always have been key entities for information retrieval. Yet catalogs in the modern era were designed to inventory (first) and retrieve (second) specific documents. From Hyde's catalog for the Bodleian until the late twentieth century, developments are epistemologically pragmatic--reflected in the structure of catalog records, in the rules for main entry headings, and in the rules for filing in card catalogs. After 1980 developments become empirical-reflected in research conducted by Tillett, Yee, Smiraglia, Leazer, Carlyle, and Vellucci. The influence of empiricism on the pragmatic notion of "the work" has led to increased focus on the concept of the work. The challenge for the postmodern online catalog is to fully embrace the concept of "the work," finally to facilitate it as a prime objective for information retrieval.

    Abstract
Today's electronic catalogue makes retrieval of specific records very simple and quick in most (not all) cases, but searches aimed at the reliable retrieval of all material answering a well-defined need (author, work, theme, form, etc.) are still long and tiring, and sometimes impossible, in crowded bibliographic databases. In spite of its great relevance, authority control has been and still is the "poor relative" of cataloguing, the often neglected or overlooked "other half" if we compare it to the creation of bibliographic records. The FRBR study and the new authority control standards (GARR and UNIMARC Authorities) are important steps towards future perspectives. Even today, cataloguing codes do not make clear the difference between the access points for bibliographic records and the relationships (work-to-work, author-to-work, etc.) that are independent from spoecific publications. With the development of richer authority records and relationships, the bibliographic record might be relieved of information related to entities different from publications and of all the functions more suitably worked out upstream or downstream in access systems or by links to the images and/or the texts of the publications themselves. A "light" bibliographic record would no longer be the paramount component of library information systems; it would keep its central role rather as nimble, swift turntable between access and content organization systems and systems for management and display of digital resources themselves.

    Abstract
Considerable documentation, tools, and manuals are available to aid catalogers, but without some guidance, many have no idea how to use these shelves of reference guides and manuals. This bibliography is intended as a guide to the information and resources available to assist the cataloger in cataloging. The availability of each resource is given (including online availability), along with a brief summary of the type of information that each resource contains.
