- Abstract
- The development of new technologies in the last few decades has directly influenced the organization of technical services and the way they carry out so called 'technical tasks'. One of the most recent examples is the use of the Internet for technical work. Offers a selective presentation of resources available on the Internet for the personnel of technical services generally, and especially for acquisitions and cataloguing. Presents a summary review of how Internet resources are being used to the advantage of technical services in Catalan academic libraries. The 2nd part of the article will look at Internet resources intended for the processing of specific materials such as serials, electronic resources, special collections, etc.

- Shows the possibilities that exist to create a basic hypertext interface for a thesaurus management system. The project has been built in 3 stages: conceptual data model for the thesaurus; development of the management tools, that is, the thesaurus management system; and the hypertext interfaces. The system has been developed on Windows and combines the power of relational database management systems and the navigational flexibility of Guide, a hypertext shell. presents 2 interface models. - Telecommunications networks and standard protocols for information retrieval aid physical access to geographically scattered libraries. - Abstract
- Report of a study from the user's point of view, investigating the facility with which bibliographical material can be identified in a multidisciplinary field, the prospective for peace, from the University's resources. Searches (uniterm and relational) were effected using all available tools - OPACs, CD-ROM collections, online databases, manual catalogues, the Internet - both on the University's system and on national research institutions. Overall results returned a low rate of pertinence (1,86%). This is due not to lack of user search expertise but the lack of subject specific indexing coupled with using a MARC format

- For higher education, new technology opens up the possibility of online access to international information networks comprising the totality of human knowledge. Developing countries however risk becoming marginalized because they have no culture of cooperation. The Colombian Institute for the Development of Higher Education, ICFES, has been instrumental in developing the National Science and Technology Information Network, linked in 1993 to the National Higher Education System. - Abstract
- Reports of a study in a Chilean university library, comparing 100 users of online databases and CD-ROMs with 100 users of non-computerized bibliographical resources. Results showed that users tended to be teachers / researchers, and potential users were postgraduate students. Comparison of search results showed online searching improved results and saved time. The chief reasons for non-use were ignorance of the service and use of own personal computer. The study indicated the need to review policy on database acquisition and improve promotion of the service. - Criticizes the current processes of information management, with the objective of arriving at a new concept of the electronic document. Discusses problems of human language in the context of information management. Examines the problem of information from the point of view of the structure of knowledge, by analysing dysfunction in current processes of information management.
