    Abstract
The forth report in a series of studies, based on the 2 year Getty Art History Information Project; where humanities scholars were trained in DIALOG online searching and then allowed 24 hour unlimited access to DIALOG. Complete transaction logs were taken and form the data upon which the Getty Online Searching Project is based. Data obtained from the study is used to draw conclusions about the design of humanities information resources, particularly databases and other online resources

    Abstract
User persistence in displaying postings is a significant human factor in the design of computer driven information systems, including online catalogs. Expert opinion and a study of users of a first generation online catalogue have suggested that users normally display no more than 30 to 35 postings. A follow up study on a second generation system with a larger database found that a greater proportion of users reported overload, but 100 postings (rather than 15) were considered 'too many'. Partially persistent users typically displayed 28 postings, but overloaded uses did not outnumber totally persistent users until postings retrieved exceeded 200. The findings suggest that, given sufficient resources, designers should still consider 30 to 35 postings typical persistence, but also justify treating 100 or 200 postings as a common threshold of overload

    Abstract
Reports results of an evaluation of the Online at PA Libraries project (Autumn 1996 to Autumn 1997), funded by Bell Atlantic and administered by the Pennsylvania Dept. of Education's Office of Commonwealth Libraries and the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit, which has had a significant impact on the provision of Internet based information services and resources to Pennsylvania public library users. 4 surveys were conducted: a survey to assess the participating libraries' expectations concerning the project; a user survey to determine user satisfaction, demographic and overall project and Internet assessment; and 2 training evaluation surveys conducted at the start and at the follow up stage of the project. The project has provided a statewide demonstration of what can be done to improve quickly and significantly the statewide public library services; to connect public libraries to the Internet and provide a range of new services and resources to their communities; and to 'junpstart' libraries, librarians and citizens into the global networked society

    Abstract
Reports results of a questionnaire survey, conducted with vetrinary medical students at Iowa State University in 1997, to determine their general use of the Veterinary Medical Library and how they sought information in an electronic environment. Comparisons were made between this study and an ealier study (Bull. MLA 76(1988) no.4, S.328-333). Basic patterns of student activities in the library were found to be unchanged. The 1997 students used the library most frequently for photocopying, office supplies, and studying coursework; and they preferred textbooks and handouts for current information. However, a major shift was seen from the use of print indexes and abstracts in 1987 towards the use of computerized indexes and other electronic resources in 1997. 60% of the students reported using the Internet for current information. Overall use of electronic materials was highest among students receiving the problem based learning method of instruction. Most of the 1997 students indicated that electronic resources would be important for future education needs, particularly the wealth of information and services available on the Internet and WWW

    Abstract
I(nvestigates the constituents of a good research task, requiring students to construct meaning from a variety of resources. The study involved collaboration between a high school media specialist, 7 teachers, and a university faculty member in Michigan, USA. 6 research projects involving 387 students of all ability levels were observed to identify elements associated with meaningsful research. Data were collected from a questionnaire completed by all students and student and teacher interviews. elements found to be related to satisfaction with the research process and to satisfaction with achievement were: student choice of topic, group work, course related topics, clarity of goals and means of evaluation, and process instruction

    Abstract
Account of a limited experimental study at the Bibliothèque Publique d'Informations (BPI), the Paris multimedia public library, to establish a methodology for investigating user interactions with new technology. A wide range of materials are available at the BPI, including CD-ROMs and the Internet. Preliminary observations indicate that users do not follow the pattern dictated by the machine, but take approaches based on their own experience and skills. Setbacks are generally interpreted as defects in the software, not personla failure to master the system. Large scale qualitative abservation, using research methods from the social sciences, would establish a knowledge base for developing user skills to exploit multimedia resources more fully

    Abstract
Reports results of a survey, conducted by the State University of New York and Albany Library, to investigate the effects of gender, college status and prior Internet experience on the use of Internet resources. The subjects were 96 randomly selected users using the library's Internet terminals during the first 2 months of 1995. The majority of users were found to share the following characteristics: male undergraduates affiliated with the social sciences; and novice users who have less than 6 months experience. Respondents felt strongly that the Internet is useful, and has been an important resource for their research and assignment. Users have high expectations of searching capabilities, while they feel neutral or disappointed with browsing. Results indicate that libraries should provide access to the Internet and suggest that libraries should take the lead in developing searchable indexes and making databases better organized for the ease and effectiveness of browsing

    Abstract
Reports of a study in a Chilean university library, comparing 100 users of online databases and CD-ROMs with 100 users of non-computerized bibliographical resources. Results showed that users tended to be teachers / researchers, and potential users were postgraduate students. Comparison of search results showed online searching improved results and saved time. The chief reasons for non-use were ignorance of the service and use of own personal computer. The study indicated the need to review policy on database acquisition and improve promotion of the service. In general, librarians should motivate greater use of online searching by providing skilled intermediary services to maximize uptake
