    Abstract
The history of encyclopedias and wholly new forms of encyclopedias are briefly reviewed. The possibilities and problems that hypertext presents as a basis for new forms of encyclopedias are explored. The capabilities of current systems, both experimental and commercially available, are outlined, focusing on new possibilities for authoring and design and for reading the retrieval. Examples of applications already making use of hypertext are given.

    Abstract
On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the UNISIST Study Report on the feasibility of a World Science Information System, this paper reconsiders the issue of compatibility of indexing languages in the context of the practice of science at the close of the twentieth century. Aspects of incompatibility and approaches to achieving compatibility are summarized, followed by identification of a research agenda for compatibility

    Abstract
This entry provides an overview of reference services and the impact of technology on reference sources and services. Following a brief overview of the history of reference services, the types and scope of reference services are explained. Features of the reference interview and factors contributing to its success are considered, followed by a discussion of the various types of reference sources and the development of reference collections. Outline of the impact of technology on new forms of service delivery includes an explanation of both asynchronous and synchronous approaches. The ways in which reference ethics and reference policies guide services are reviewed, and the role of evaluation in assessing effectiveness of reference services is explored. This entry concludes with indications of future trends in reference services.
