    Abstract
Bibliographic(al) control is important for retrieving documents in the library. Reviews previous studies in order to understand bibliographic(al) control from its very beginnings up to the present information age. The history, meaning, scope and functions of bibliographic(al) control are included. Finally, various catalogues are reviewed and discussed

    Abstract
Uncertainty over the future of cataloguing and the gap between cataloguing research and practice exist partially because of the rapid change in technology over the 20th century. Explores the role of technology in its relation to cataloguing knowledge and research. Examines the history of technology in cataloguing. A conventional view of cataloguing practice is followed by a critical review of impacts of technology on cataloguing theories. Recommendations are made on some issues of cataloguing research and the directions cataloguing researchers and practitioners should take

    Abstract
Since 1980, most of the functions of the card catalog have been gradually incorporated into the online catalog. In contrast, the traditional shelflist has fallen into obscurity as retrospective conversion projects have been completed. Most of the functions of the traditional shelflist have been incorporated into the online catalog; nevertheless, the online catalog still does not provide all the functions that the traditional shelflist used to perform. This paper introduces how Washington State University Libraries set up an online history file to incorporate some of the functions of the traditional shelflist into their online catalog.

    Abstract
In 1971 the eminent American scholar G. Thomas Tanselle wrote: "the day has not yet come when one can learn anything of a library's holdings of jackets by consulting its catalogue." Forty-four years later, library catalogs still do not allow that. Book-jackets, whose "original sin" is their being physically separate from the book, are nevertheless essential documents for the history of publishing. This article aims to show the necessity for access to the information about a single book's book-jacket directly from the library catalog; it considers the reasons why catalogers usually "distrust" book-jackets; and it aims to determine whether there is any change in attitude about taking book-jackets into account in cataloging.

    Abstract
Next-generation catalogues can be viewed as the latest manifestation of a tendency in library catalogue history to strive for centralization of access to collections-a single portal for the discovery of library resources. Due to an increasing volume of published materials and the explosion of online information resources during the Internet age, the library does not currently provide centralized access to its various information silos, nor does it provide a user-friendly search and retrieval experience for users whose expectations are shaped by Google and other major commercial Web sites. Searching across library resources is a complicated task, bearing high-attention "transaction costs" for the user, which discourage the use of library resources. Libraries need access systems that minimize complexity, easing discovery and delivery of resources for user populations. Here, the authors review past efforts of centralization of access, consider the potential of next-generation catalogues in the context of this historical tendency toward centralization of access, and describe what goals underlie that centralization.
