    Abstract
State of the art review of the historical development of information science as deemed to be covered by the particular interests of memebers of the American Society for Information Science, as defined as the representation, storage, transmission, selection, retrieval, filtering, and use of documents and messages. Arranges the references cited roughly according to the classification scheme used by Information Science Abstracts, and so uses the headings: background; information science; techniques and technology; information related behaviour; application areas; social aspects; education for information science; institutions; individuals; geographical areas; and conclusions

    Abstract
The classification system of the Warburg Institute library, London, UK, is considered. First, a brief review of the scholary work of Aby Warburg and the history of this library is given to illustrate the background of the classification. The classification is described and its basic features are clarified with examples. Finally, the classification of the Warburg Institute library is contrasted with ordinary classification thinking in library and information science

    Abstract
Describes the history and origins of the International Institute of Bibliography, founded in 1895 and which later became the FID. Outlines the work of Paul Otlet and his colleagues in developing the idea of universal bibliographic control through the Répertoire Bibliographique Universel and the emergence of the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) as the means of its classifies arrangement. Stresses the key role played by this work in developing the main concepts of information science and documentation

    Abstract
The paper presents a coword-analysis-based system called SDOC which is able to pupport the intellectual work of an end-user who is searching for information in a bibliographic database. This is done by presenting its thematical structure as a map of keyword clusters (themes) on a graphical user interface. These mapping facilities are demonstrated on the basis of the research field Social History given by a set of documents from the social science literature database SOLIS. Besides the traditional way of analysing a coword map as a strategic diagram, the notion of cluster relationships analysis is introduced which provides an adequate interpretation of links between themes

    Abstract
Presents the history of relevance through an exhaustive review of the literature. Defines a framework for establishing a common ground, and illustrates the history via the presentation in chronological order of the papers on relevance. The history is divided into 3 periods (before 1958, 1959-1976, and 1977-present) and, inside each period, analyzes papers on relevancee under 7 different aspects

    Abstract
A bibliography of the history of information science in North America, 1900-1995, created by the University of South Caroline College of Library and Information Science, USA, under a grant from the Special Interest Group Projects Fund of the American Society for Information Science. The project identified early individual and organizations of information science in the USA and Canada, determines the location of the personal/professional papers and archives of these pioneers, and compiled the bibliography. The bibliography id divided into: books (including encyclopaedia articles), journal articles, and unpublished papers

    Abstract
Examines some of the difficulties for the historian of information science that arises from the lack of of agreement as to what precisely constitutes information science and from its commonly accepted interdisciplinary nature. Examines in this connection Machlup and Mansfield's ideas about a narrow information science and information science as a composite of disciplinary chunks. The history of information science is gaining an identity both bibliographically and socially. As a condition of their organization, reproduction, and control all societies have evolved their own disctinctive ways of managing information. The history of information science can be considered to extend far beyond the last 50 years where attention is commonly focused. In view of Braudel's notations or duree longue, moyenne and courte, periodicity provides a new perspective for the history of information science. Introduces the notions of synchrony and diachrony to suggest other approaches to the historical study of aspects of information science

    Abstract
Historicial studies using computers and social science research methodologies share many interests, techniques, methods and approaches with modern information science. The major difference is a focus on retrospective rather than contemporary research topics and attendant differences in methods resulting from the nature of historical sources and the impact of time on interpretation. Whereas historical informatics evolved as a focus on computer science and history from quantification research, this field is still growing and absorbing in an interdisciplinary manner material, methods and approaches from other fields in accord with the syncretic nature of history. This enlarged arena may be called Historical Information Science, which is exemplified by the recent conferences and activities of the International Association of History and Computing
