    Abstract
Gives a background to the development of community networks giving an outline of the current situation. Describes the information and services found on the networks, the connection the systems use, who starts and runs the systems and their sources of funding. Presents a range of current models describing HAWAII FYI, National Capital FreeNEt. Ottawa, Wellington City Council's Community Computer Network, New Zealand, and Big Sky Telegraphy, Dilton, Montana, and outlining other models. Examines social aspects of the systems and looks to the future of these systems in the light of changing technology

    Abstract
Hertfordshire Libraries, Arts and Information, are developing an increasingly broad information services role. They have adopted ALS' InfoCentre, a public information network system which integrates with the existing library systems and offers community based services, where many information providers can offer their information in parallel. The services also plans to publish the county's public information resources on the Internet

    Abstract
Despite the fact that Internet resources are similar in function and form to many print and electronic resources with which library users are familiar, users are often intimidated by this network medium in terms of what is available and how to gain access to it. Once obtained, the sheer quantity of information that can and is stored in electronic form confronts users with the need to filter and organize it for personal use. Librarians, based on their training and experience, are the most appropriate intermediaries to assist in connecting to and understanding these network resources. Discusses the development of practical strategies for mediation between Internet resources and potential users

    Abstract
The emergence of the Internet has dramatically changed computerized information access and tools and resources available on the Internet affect library services in various ways. Many health science librarians are using Internet resources to meet their own information needs, and those of health care providers. Examnies different applications of the Internet components in medical library settings, with special emphasis on reference services, discusses the role of the Internet in fulfilling National Network of Libraries of Medicine's (NN/LM) objectives, and analyzes the merit and demerits of using the Internet as a reference tool in health science libraries

The University of the West of England (UWE) Library Science comprises 4 campus libraries spread across Bristol. It has gradually developed network services and access to JANET and the Internet for the libraries at all campuses but has only recently had access to Netscape. Reports 2 case studies conducted by UWE librarians on using the Internet for Fine Art Print resources and using JANET/Internet resources to support mathematics highlighting some common thoughts and issues surrounding the Internet

    Abstract
Libraries and the information community have moved rapidly into an era of powerful networked scholarly workstations, large quantities of information accessible in electronic formats, and dispersed information sources connected to regional and national networks. This rich diversity poses new challenges for the provision of appropriate reference services. The University of Texas at Austin General Libraries successfully implemented and tested a prototype solution to the problem of providing reference assistance to scholars who are accessing networked information resources and who are at locations remote from expert librarians. Librarians were able to intervene directly in information access and retrieval sessions, remotely assisting the user during the real-time, online process. The testbed for the project was a CD-ROM network delivering US government information to DOS workstations via Ethernets connected to a routed TCP/IP wide-area network and utilizing off-the-shelf remote control software. Although problems with existing technology were discovered, this mode of providing reference assistance is a valid model for future services

    Abstract
Free-Net Cleveland is a completely free, open-access community computer system operated and coordinated by Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, ohio. Through Free-Net, users can access a wide range of electronic services and features including free electronic mail and the Internet as well as valuable university information sources such as the university's online catalogue, government documents, and links to faculty memebers in academic areas. Free-Net also functional as a communication medium for the university, providing opportunities for enhanced student/faculty interaction, and it functional as an education resource for schoolchildren through its Academy One component. Free-Net relies heavily on volunteers from the community to operate it and keep it current. Free-Net Cleveland is part of the National Public Telecomputing Network, which is being created to provide networked services ansd links between Free-Nets throughout North America and the world

    Abstract
Reprts results of a survey, conducted by the CAVAL Reference Interest Group on AARNet and the Internet and WWW, the principal aim of which was to investigate the extent to which reference librarians in academic libraries use workshops available on the Internet. The survey, which involved 11 university libraires in Victoria, Australia, also covered: the extent and frequency of use of network facilities and services such as AARNet; library staff training in the use of the networks; expertise in the use of the networks; training given by reference librarians to academic staff and students; and other comments related to the Internet. Results indicated a great deal of Internet facilities by reference librarians in university libraries in Victoria, with the commonest services used being electronic mail, discussion lists, national and international library catalogues, and periodicals databases. There is increasing use of Gophers, either produced by home institutions or those of their institutions. A major problem identified was the amount of time needed to train Internet users. FTP, as a means of transferring computerized files from one computer to another, appears to be relatively little used

    Abstract
With support provided by a grant from the CLR, the SUNY University Center Libraries conducted a four-campus survey of faculty use of electronic information technologies and resources. The survey and analysis are the first such study includiong all academic disciplines and a broad range of faculty at several institutions joined in a consortial relationship. The survey's objectives were to determine the availability to faculty of equipment and network connections necessary for access to electronic information resources, to measure use and frequency of use of these resources, to report locations from which faculty access electronic information, and to elicit faculty perceptions of obstacles to the use of electronic technologies and library services which might stimulate use of such resources. The findings reveal that there are inequities in access to electronic technologies among the disciplines; that the most common obstacle to use of electronic information for faculty is lack of knowledge about resources; and that there is strong interest in initiating various library transactions via e-mail or a campuswide information system. The survey results present clear mandates related to information services, training, the allocation of funds for networking, and access to electronic information resources for libraries

    Abstract
Explores issues surrounding the provision of online services and electronic resources in US public libraries, and discusses the appropriate directions for public libraries to pursue. Investigates traditional online reference tools, CD-ROM databases, OPACs, community bulletin boards and access to information resources via the Internet. Discusses national versus local library goals, strategies for online services, and consequences for service and cost controls. Considers the role of public libraries within NII. Access to computer networks for all citizens is essential and, whether information is made available through books or networks, public libraries must continue to play a critical role in public access
