    Abstract
Reviews the particular qualities of the CD-ROM and the World Wide Web on the Internet in their separate operation, and then makes out a case for their combined use. The need for such hybrid systems results from problems of bandwidth across networks, and presumably these difficulties may be resolved as network speeds are upgraded. In the meantime hybrid CD-ROM/WWW applications have the potential to deliver the necessary bandwidth for multimedia combined with the timeliness of the Web. The author draws on experience within AGOCG (the Advisory Group Computer graphics: a JISC initiative)

    Abstract
Reviews the consumer network Microsoft Network (MSN) which is bundled in with Windows 95. Gives a tour of the system, commenting about navigation methods, and highlighting problems with the FIND command. The system suffers from commercialization, aggressive tactics, bugs, and lack of content. Outlines a number of its pluses

    Abstract
NOVAGate is a subject-based information gateway covering electronic resources in the agricultural, veterinary and related fields. The service, which opened in July 1998, is produced by the veterinary and agricultural libraries of the 5 Nordic countries - Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden - which serve the NOVA University. The gateway covers Nordic and European resources as well as the resources of international organizations, but being planned is a network of subject gateways which will give access to a wide range of international quality resources within the agricultural, veterinary and related fields. The service uses the ROADS software

    Abstract
Every librarian knows undergraduate students rarely evaluate the information they find in a print index, much less what comes from a computer sreen. This knowledge is compounded by the undergraduate's belief that anything coming from the Internet is the gospel truth. Is the Internet being integrated into library instruction, taught as another research tool, or taught as something soecial? Are students being taught to evaluate Internet resources? In this annotated bibliography, Hahn examines journal articles, book chapters, and Web sites that discuss the evaluation of information found through the Internet

    Abstract
'Quality-controlled subject gateways' are Internet services which apply a rich set of quality measures to support systematic resource discovery. Considerable manual effort is used to secure a selection of resources which meet quality criteria and to display a rich description of these resources with standards-based metadata. Regular checking and updating ensure good collection management. A main goal is to provide a high quality of subject access through indexing resources using controlled vocabularies and by offering a deep classification structure for advanced searching and browsing. This article provides an initial empirical overview of existing services of this kind, their approaches and technologies, based on proposed working definitions and typologies of subject gateways

    Abstract
Reports a survey of all academic members of the Association of Research Libraries in the 4th quarter of 1997 which examined how academic libraries incorporate electronic information sources into their reference activities and the effects on libraries services. There was a response rate of 68 per cent, Compares results surveys carried out in 1991 and 1994. The survey covered: numbers of computers access options (intermediary, end user online, CD-ROM locally loaded databases or those accessible through the library catalogue and the Internet. There is a trend away from print resources, particularly indexing and abstracting materials, and away from CD-ROM LANs and local loading of databases towards remote online resources

    Abstract
The key political and strategic issues which needs to be addressed for the future development of the Australian subject gateways are: continued quality of content creation, integration of access to print and electronic resources, archiving and persistent identification, sustainability of services and service integration. These issues will be more effectively tackled internationally, and the Australian subject gateways are keen to work with international collaborators to achieve a mutually beneficial outcome

What follows is, in effect, a directory of CD-ROM directories. This may sound like the guide to the guidebooks of the map of the starcharts, but it is a listing of directories that cover broad or particular aspects of the CD-ROM and multimedia industry. Included in this list are directories of titles, developers, publishers, distributors, content providers, graphic and interface designers, programmers, post-production services, hardware/software vendors, information service providers, network service providers, legal services, funding sources, video and audio companies, and market research firms

    Abstract
The growing number of networked information resources and services offers unprecedented opportunities for delivering high quality information to the computer desktop of a wide range of individuals. However, currently there is a reliance on a database retrieval model, in which endusers use keywords to search large collections of automatically indexed resources in order to find needed information. As an alternative to the database retrieval model, this paper outlines the classical digital library model, which is derived from traditional practices of library and information science professionals. These practices include the selection and organization of information resources for local populations of users and the integration of advanced information retrieval tools, such as databases and the Internet into these collections. To evaluate this model, library and information professionals and endusers involved with primary care medicine were asked to respond to a series of questions comparing their experiences with a digital library developed for the primary care population to their experiences with general Internet use. Preliminary results are reported

    Abstract
As the popularity of the recently installed CD-ROM network increased rapidly, and free online searches were offered to users, St. Mary's University Library, Texas, found that the use of printed abstracting and indexing services diminished rapidly. When the library investigated the possibility of cancelling the printed services, they found that it was possible in many cases to do so without impairing the service offered to users. Three database examples are presented: Social Sciences Citation Index; Engineering Index; and Index Medicus; to show how the library were able to effect successful replacements, for different reasons. Factors considered when making decisions about keeping or cancelling printed indexes in favour of electronic formats included: price; ease of access; usage patterns; end results and retrieval characteristics; quality of indexing and content; and ownership

    Abstract
Telephone directories are one of the most used sources of information in a reference collection. As the library literature indicates, they are a stable reference tool with a strong history of use. Further, it has been observed that telephone directories are familiar to most users, and resources such as the community pages and yellow pages are used extensively. However, the emergence of CD-ROM technology and libraries being charged for printed directories has raised questions concerning the future of an all-print telephone directory collection in libraries. Yet, evaluation of acquisitions alternatives for these resources is largely missing in the library literature. In this article, Boettcher and Kingma review the literature regarding the use of telephone directories in academic and public libraries and provide a cost analysis of the four purchasing options regarding telephone directories: printed directories, directory assistance, Phonefiche, and CD-ROMs
