    Abstract
Several methods have been developed for designing and searching full text document databases. Standards, both proposed and official, have been developed to respond to questions relating to the structure, linkages, searching transmission capabilities of full text databases. These standards include the Open Document Architecture (ODA), the SGML and its derivatives, and the Information Retrieval Service Definition and Protocol Specification for Library Applications (ANSI/NISO Z39.50-1992)
