Abstract: The aim of the ELISE project is to investigate the feasibility of providing remote access to full colour image data banks and an electronic document delivery service for European Community states via internation networks, by developing a prototye system. This will provide access to images via a detailed textual record incorporating fully indexed and searchable fields. Images are identified by fields in the database which contain pointers to locate this files. The project is funded by the European Commission and a consortium of partners, comprising: De Montfort University; IBM UK Scientific Centre; Victoria and Albert Museum; and Tilburg University. Its 4 objectives are to: identify the technical requirements of establishing full colour image data banks in libraries; explore storage and retrieval mechanisms; explore user needs and interface design issues; and specify and model the international interlinking of systems. Describes the research work under the 4 main headings of: images; retrieval; interconnection; and user interface (graphic user interface)
