    Abstract
    Traditional cataloging support services such as typing and filing are gradually being eliminated in favor of more sophisticated skills. Library staff members who are specialized in imminently obsolete skills must be re-educated to become productive participants in the "Golden Age" of technology. The Catalog Management section at the Iowa State University Library is attempting to make this process painless and exciting for all of its employees.

    Abstract
    This study assesses the current state of responsibilities and skill sets required of cataloging professionals. It identifies emerging roles and competencies focusing on the digital environment and relates these to the established knowledge of traditional cataloging standards and practices. We conducted a content analysis of 349 job descriptions advertised in AutoCAT in 2005-2006. Multivariate techniques of cluster and multidimensional-scaling analyses were applied to the data. Analysis of job titles, required and preferred qualifications/skills, and responsibilities lends perspective to the roles that cataloging professionals play in the digital environment. Technological advances increasingly demand knowledge and skills related to electronic resource management, metadata creation, and computer and Web applications. Emerging knowledge and skill sets are increasingly being integrated into the core technical aspects of cataloging such as bibliographic and authority control and integrated library-system management. Management of cataloging functions is also in high demand. The results of the study provide insight on current and future curriculum design of library and information-science programs.

    Abstract
    Research libraries are using batchloading to provide access to many resources that they would otherwise be unable to catalog given the staff and other resources available. To explore how such libraries are managing their batchloading activities, the authors conducted a survey of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services Directors of Large Research Libraries Interest Group member libraries. The survey addressed staffing, budgets, scope, workflow, management, quality standards, information technology support, collaborative efforts, and assessment of batchloading activities. The authors provide an analysis of the survey results along with suggestions for process improvements and future research.

    Abstract
    This article describes the cataloging operations and management in three medium-sized academic libraries - Oregon State University, University of Houston, and Colorado State University. It provides an overview of the staffing and organizational structure of the cataloging department in each library. Faced with similar challenges from constantly changing environments brought about by technology and institutional pressure to achieve more with less, library technical services in these three libraries, cataloging in particular, are developing some common strategies for coping. These trends include: (1) changing the roles and responsibilities of both professional and support staff (2) designing workflow around library systems and limited personnel resources, (3) mainstreaming government documents cataloging and processing into technical services, (4) using technology to increase cataloging efficiency, and (5) dealing with bibliographic control of current electronic resources and moving into digitization and metadata arenas.

    Abstract
    Information technology (IT) encompassing an integrated library system, computer hardware and software, CDROM, Internet, and other domains, including MARC 21 formats, CORC, and metadata standards (Dublin Core, TEI, XML, RDF) has produced far-reaching changes in the job functions of catalogers.     Abstract
    Catalogers have become fluent in information technology such as web design skills, HyperText Markup Language (HTML), Cascading Stylesheets (CSS), eXensible Markup Language (XML), and programming languages. The knowledge gained from learning information technology can be used to experiment with methods of transforming one metadata schema into another using various software solutions. This paper will discuss the use of eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) for repurposing, editing, and reformatting metadata. Catalogers have the requisite skills for working with any metadata schema, and if they are excluded from metadata work, libraries are wasting a valuable human resource.

    Abstract
    Beginning in 1992 the University Libraries at the Pennsylvania State University embarked on a program to formally transform its organization following the principles of Continuous Quality Improvement, or, as it is more commonly known, Total Quality Management. The process by which the Cataloging Department underwent reorganization into teams is described, as well as its strategic use of computing technology in rationalizing and streamlining its workflows. In creating an organizational restructuring that permitted a more rapid and flexible response to new assignments and changing conditions, the Cataloging Department positioned itself to effectively assume new responsibilities as emerging formats and other library materials were acquired or made accessible to library patrons. The essay concludes with a frank assessment of the lessons learned in undergoing reorganization, as well as weighing the successes and failures experienced by the Cataloging Department.

    Abstract
    The paper performs a thought experiment on the concept of a record based on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records and library system functions, and concludes that if we want to develop a functional bibliographic record we need to do it within the context of a flexible, functional library systems record structure. The article suggests a new way to look at the library systems record that would allow libraries to move forward in terms of technology but also in terms of serving library users.

    Abstract
    This book looks at the ways that we define the things of the bibliographic world, and in particular how our bibliographic models reflect our technology and the assumed goals of libraries. There is, of course, a history behind this, as well as a present and a future. The first part of the book begins by looking at the concept of the 'work' in library cataloging theory, and how that concept has evolved since the mid-nineteenth century to date. Next it talks about models and technology, two areas that need to be understood before taking a long look at where we are today. It then examines the new bibliographic model called Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and the technical and social goals that the FRBR Study Group was tasked to address. The FRBR entities are analyzed in some detail. Finally, FRBR as an entity-relation model is compared to a small set of Semantic Web vocabularies that can be seen as variants of the multi-entity bibliographic model that FRBR introduced.

    Discusses the management of the impact of technological change on technical services, especially cataloguing. Describes a number of library applications of recent and developing technologies, starting with the more familiar and firmly established such as OPACs and library networks then moving to less established applications such as electronic publishing and expert systems.     Abstract
    Many technology-related changes in technical services have affected not only what we catalogue, but how access is provided. At the McMaster University Library, there have been many changes in the organizational structure and composition of the Bibliographic Services division in the past few years. This paper will document the management of the cataloguing and maintenance functions and the organization of information at a Canadian academic library. Future trends and how the library is planning for them are also discussed.

    Abstract
    Encoded Archival Description (EAD) has provided a new way to approach manuscript and archival collection representation. A review of previous representational practices and problems highlights the benefits of using EAD. This new approach should be considered a partner rather than an adversary in the access providing process. Technological capabilities now allow for multiple metadata schemas to be employed in the creation of the finding aid. Crosswalks allow for MARC records to be generated from the detailed encoding of an EAD finding aid. In the process of creating these crosswalks and detailed encoding, EAD has generated more changes in traditional processes and procedures than originally imagined. The North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries sought to test the process of crosswalking EAD to MARC, investigating how this process used technology as well as changed physical procedures. By creating a complex and indepth EAD template for finding aids, with accompanying related encoding analogs embedded within the element structure, MARC records were generated that required minor editing and revision for inclusion in the NCSU Libraries OPAC. The creation of this bridge between EAD and MARC has stimulated theoretical discussions about the role of collaboration, technology, and expertise in the ongoing struggle to maximize access to our collections. While this study is a only a first attempt at harnessing this potential, a presentation of the tensions, struggles, and successes provides illumination to some of the larger issues facing special collections today.

    Abstract
    The Bibliographic Control Division of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) consists of three sections: bibliography, cataloguing, and classification. The cataloguing section, which focuses on descriptive cataloguing, is one of the oldest within IFLA, having been founded in 1935 as the IFLA Committee on Uniform Cataloguing Rules. It became the Committee on Cataloguing in 1970. The committee played a key role in planning and convening the International Conference on Cataloguing Principles held in Paris in 1961 and the International Meeting of Cataloguing Experts held in Copenhagen in 1969. The Copenhagen conference provided the impetus to develop the International Standard Bibliographic Descriptions (ISBD). The Committee on Cataloguing established a systematic process for the revision of the ISBDs. The cataloguing section focuses on traditional cataloguing standards and on the impact of electronic resources and technology on these standards. The section has initiated several projects at the international level to facilitate access to information.
