    Abstract
State of the art review of the historical development of information science as deemed to be covered by the particular interests of memebers of the American Society for Information Science, as defined as the representation, storage, transmission, selection, retrieval, filtering, and use of documents and messages. Arranges the references cited roughly according to the classification scheme used by Information Science Abstracts, and so uses the headings: background; information science; techniques and technology; information related behaviour; application areas; social aspects; education for information science; institutions; individuals; geographical areas; and conclusions

    Abstract
State of the art reviews coveruing a range of topics relating to small business information work, including: the relationship between small businesses and information sources and providers available to them; the use of information by small businesses; the state of the information technology adoption process by small businesses; and changes in small business information use. Concludes with a discussion about future research in the field and includes hypotheses about the impact of information access and technology on small businesses. Pays particular attention to the likely changes that are likely to take place in the small business environment, involving: telecommuting; and the electronic delivery of customized, timely environmental scanning information that will permit small businesses to function like big businesses. Decries the absence of effective links between small businesses and the information brokering world but sees small businesses taking advantage of some of the new lower cost online services that are being offered through the Internet

    Abstract
State of the art review of natural language processing updating an earlier review published in ARIST 22(1987). Discusses important developments that have allowed for significant advances in the field of natural language processing: materials and resources; knowledge based systems and statistical approaches; and a strong emphasis on evaluation. Reviews some natural language processing applications and common problems still awaiting solution. Considers closely related applications such as language generation and th egeneration phase of machine translation which face the same problems as natural language processing. Covers natural language methodologies for information retrieval only briefly

    Abstract
State of the art review of database access system focusing on end user access to databases. Covers the period from 1987, when CD-ROM databases began to be introduced, through 1993, as locally mounted databases and Internet access came into play. Covers: the end user interface; database selection; management of database access; searching and use and economics of database searching; and improving end user searching

    Abstract
Selectively surveys recent materials (mostly from 1990 to 1994) on basic imaging technologies like scanners, storage media, display units and compression; and reviews in a summary way publications of general interest to library professionals. Emphasizes material from the public and academic library domains. Excludes museum librarianship, records management and commercial/ industrial applications although a few references are included as representative of various approaches to exploiting imaging capabilities

    Abstract
State of the art review of the concept and practice of information resources management (IRM), particularly during the period 1986 to 1995. Notes the emergence of 2 approaches: the technological view emphasizing the technical aspect of IRM; and the integrative view which considers IRM as a convergent approach to information problems. Identifies the perceived barriers to IRM implementation: lack of well defined IRM concepts, practices, guidelines and tools; failure of organizations to perceive information as a resource; lack of measurement of information costs and value; and resistance to organizational change, such as the modification of organizational structures, policies, procedures, and the new roles for information professionals. Concludes by suggesting that there is a trend toward an integrative approach to IRM in terms of value added processes and considers whether IRM is finding its way as a discipline or subdiscipline within information science

    Abstract
This article provides a review of cataloging and classification publications that appeared in the last two years. The review considers the papers in two categories. Cataloging Theories and Practices covers descriptive cataloging, authority control, classification, subject cataloging, cataloging nonbook materials, electronic resources and metadata, and international cooperation. The second section covers other issues related to cataloging, including management, and education and training. Throughout the review, the author identifies trends and important developments in the area of cataloging and classification.
