    Abstract
The US cataloging community is an interorganizational network with the Library of Congress (LC) as the lead organization, which reserves to itself the power to shape cataloging rules. Peripheral members of the network who are interested in modifying changes to the rules or to the network can use various strategies for organizational change that incorporate building ties to the decision-makers located at the hub of the network. The story of William E. Studwell's campaign for a subject heading code illustrates how some traditional scholarly methods of urging change-papers and presentations-are insufficient to achieve reform in an interorganizational network, absent strategies to build alliances with the decision makers.

    Abstract
Offers advice on avaluating alternative cataloguing sources. The steps should be: identify the possible providers; network for advice; test or sample attractive systems; develop criteria based on library size, type and location (e.g. cost and equipment needs, currency of records, types of materials accessed, customer service and reputation of vendor, impact on staff/time and other library services and ability to share or network information); and evaluate the possible services; and implement the new service

    Abstract
Traces the common genealogy and chronology of the development of bibliographic utilities from their inception in the late 60s in Europe and North America, each acting as the hub of a bibliographic resource sharing community and establishing private telecommunications connections. Explores the impact of incrementing network bandwidth on the utilities, the expectations of the communities they serve and the prospect of their consequent dependence on common communications highways. Considers the terms and structures being established to manage and resource these common telecommunication networks and the extent to which their governance facilitates accountabiblity to the users and providers they serve

    Abstract
Library science may well have an essential role to play in efficiently organising the huge amount of Internet information available in the various scientific disciplines. The basic problem is to develop a cataloguing theory sufficiently flexible to cope with the impact of an ever changing store of network data. Such a theory would abondon the utopian idea of a 'catalogue of ctalogues', seeking instead to match each specific user query to the most appropriate catalogue. Examines 2 important USA projects for cataloguing network resources: Digital Libraries Research (funded by the National Science Foundation), which uses a combination of search engines to retrieve net data; and the Internet Public Library. Abstract
Efforts at networking and cooperation have flourished for some time at the University of the West Indies (UWI), a regional institution in the English-speaking Caribbean. Due to their common mission and shared goals, libraries within the system have collaborated on projects to enhance the services provided to their clients. In its attempt at collaboration, the Mona Campus established the UWI Mona Information Network, the primary goal of which is the creation of a campus-wide online catalog with member libraries having access to a larger pool of resources. Most of the departmental libraries within the system have struggled with their inability to adequately acquire and provide access to their collections. To this end some of these libraries have collaborated with the UWI Library to have their holdings added to the online public access catalog (OPAC). This article presents an overview of the collaborative efforts of the UWI Mona Libraries.

    Abstract
Describes the difficulties encountered by the Widener Library at Harvard University in finding a suitable terminal emulation software for cataloguing that would allow staff to continue to have the flexibility of using their well developed older DOS macros in the new Windows environment. A solution was discovered in the form of Reflection for IBM, which allowed the transfer of existing macro capabilities into a much more powerful programming environment. Explains hoe the new software was implemented beginning in the summer of 1996, followed by the purchase of 107 copies for distribution over the local area network. Original monograph cataloguing productivity has increased by over 10% since the system was introduced, and quality has increased even more

    Abstract
Bibliofile is a CD-ROM cataloguing product that provides LC MARC records. Available databases include English only, foreign language materials, audio-visual materials, as well as several that are more specialized. Bibliofile runs on a PC that may be connected to a network. Advantages over an online utility include lower cost, no telecommunication problems, no slow response times, fixed subscription rates with no hourly use charges, easy installation, searching and editing and good phone support. Disadvantages include no member-contributed records and no member holdings to use for interlibrary loan. A library should consider type and level of materials catalogued, existence of an interface with a local OPAC, total cataloguing time used, and other sources for ILL searching when considering bibliofile as a cataloguing alternative

    Abstract
The study Functional Requirements for Bibliograpbic Records (FRBR) was commissioned by IFLA and published in 1998. It defines the core functions of a catalogue (and bibliographic records) as a gateway to information. For that purpose an abstract entity-relationship model of a catalogue is proposed. The FRBR model is revolutionary. The (computer) catalogue is not seen as a sequence of bibliographic records and a replica of the traditional card catalogue, but rather as a network of connected entities, enabling the user to perform seamlessly all the necessary functions. So far there has been some theoretical discussion of the model and some limited experiments, but there is a lack of research in how to implement this theoretical model in practice, in new-generation catalogues. In this paper some reactions to the model are analysed. The main focus is an consequences of the model for the OPAC interface design, particularly the searching functionality and display of results.
