    Abstract
The study Functional Requirements for Bibliograpbic Records (FRBR) was commissioned by IFLA and published in 1998. It defines the core functions of a catalogue (and bibliographic records) as a gateway to information. For that purpose an abstract entity-relationship model of a catalogue is proposed. The FRBR model is revolutionary. The (computer) catalogue is not seen as a sequence of bibliographic records and a replica of the traditional card catalogue, but rather as a network of connected entities, enabling the user to perform seamlessly all the necessary functions. So far there has been some theoretical discussion of the model and some limited experiments, but there is a lack of research in how to implement this theoretical model in practice, in new-generation catalogues. In this paper some reactions to the model are analysed. The main focus is an consequences of the model for the OPAC interface design, particularly the searching functionality and display of results.

    Abstract
First IFLA Meeting of Experts an an International Cataloguing Code«.

    Abstract
Two interviews provided the basis for this examination of the careers and contributions of Maria Teresa Sanz Briso-Montiano and Soledad Fernández-Corugedo, major figures in the development of bibliographic control in Chile. Sanz was instrumental in introducing the use of international cataloging standards; as Coordinator at the Biblioteca nacional de Chile, she reorganized technical services, promoted the use of automated library systems, and set the stage for development of a shared network. Fernández is the current coordinator of this network, Red Nacional de Información Bibliográfíca (RENIB). Significantly changing the practice of cataloging in Chile, Fernández and her staff have worked through RENIB to integrate libraries into a cooperative network, introduce standards into library processes, and create union catalogs.

    Abstract
Libraries have been making decisions on whether to use a single- or separate-record approach for cataloging e-serials based on what works best in their local library integrated systems and which approach is likely to save cataloging time. However, in the new network-level cataloging and OCLC WorldCat Local environment, we need to make cataloging decisions based on what works best in a network-level platform. This paper discusses the OCLC WorldCat Local environment, the concept of network-level cataloging, and why Washington State University has responded by migrating from a single-record to separate-record cataloging policy for e-serials.

    Abstract
Purpose - This paper aims to explore the traditional and emerging roles of cataloguing professionals in a global network information environment. That exploration becomes even more critical in view of migration of information resources into digital, electronic and virtual domains. Design/methodology/approach - An exploratory research design was adopted. The method was to first examine current issues in library and information practice with specific focus on digital technology, the electronic environment, automation, networking, the internet, cyberspace and virtual libraries. The next approach was to examine the challenges of operating in a globalized information environment. Findings - Cataloguers have key roles in knowledge segmentation, identification, organization and authentication. They are vital as content and system managers, software specialists and information retrieval system designers. In all, more than 23 roles are articulated for forward-looking cataloguing professionals. Originality/value - The paper's originality lies in its argument that roles are correlates of competencies and that as the practice of knowledge organization migrates to a dominantly global information network environment, cataloguers must upgrade their competencies in order to effectively operate in the emerging environment.
