    Abstract
Interfaces of the next generation of nomadic network services will need to be widely varying, modality independent, flexible and straight forward and easy to learn. Gives examples of the types of systems needed and sets out strategies for achieving anyone / anytime and anywhere interfaces. These systems will address the equity issues of providing access to those with disabilities, those with lower technology and bandwidth devices and provide support for agent software

    Abstract
Online communities are becoming an important tool in the communication and participation processes in our society. However, the most widespread applications are difficult to use for people with disabilities, or may involve some risks if no previous training has been undertaken. This work describes a novel social network for cognitively disabled people along with a clustering-based method for modeling activity and socialization processes of its users in a noninvasive way. This closed social network is specifically designed for people with cognitive disabilities, called Guremintza, that provides the network administrators (e.g., social workers) with two types of reports: summary statistics of the network usage and behavior patterns discovered by a data mining process. Experiments made in an initial stage of the network show that the discovered patterns are meaningful to the social workers and they find them useful in monitoring the progress of the users.

    Abstract
Community networks have existed since the 1970s when Community Memory in Berkeley, Californis, installed terminals in public places for people to read and post material of all sorts on a centralised time sharing system. Community Memory was the first known community access network. Several foundations and government agencies have funded community networks, known as freenets. Discusses the freenet movement; library involvement; the Apple Library of Tomorrow and the Morino Foundation conference on community networks and how to keep in touch with community network developments

    Abstract
Social networks evolve over time with the addition and removal of nodes and links to survive and thrive in their environments. Previous studies have shown that the link-formation process in such networks is influenced by a set of facilitators. However, there have been few empirical evaluations to determine the important facilitators. In a research partnership with law enforcement agencies, we used dynamic social-network analysis methods to examine several plausible facilitators of co-offending relationships in a large-scale narcotics network consisting of individuals and vehicles. Multivariate Cox regression and a two-proportion z-test on cyclic and focal closures of the network showed that mutual acquaintance and vehicle affiliations were significant facilitators for the network under study. We also found that homophily with respect to age, race, and gender were not good predictors of future link formation in these networks. Moreover, we examined the social causes and policy implications for the significance and insignificance of various facilitators including common jails on future co-offending. These findings provide important insights into the link-formation processes and the resilience of social networks. In addition, they can be used to aid in the prediction of future links. The methods described can also help in understanding the driving forces behind the formation and evolution of social networks facilitated by mobile and Web technologies.

    Abstract
Teenagers are among the most prolific users of social network sites (SNS). Emerging studies find that youth spend a considerable portion of their daily life interacting through social media. Subsequently, questions and controversies emerge about the effects SNS have on adolescent development. This review outlines the theoretical frameworks researchers have used to understand adolescents and SNS. It brings together work from disparate fields that examine the relationship between SNS and social capital, privacy, youth safety, psychological well-being, and educational achievement. These research strands speak to high-profile concerns and controversies that surround youth participation in these online communities, and offer ripe areas for future research.

    Abstract
A national multi-gigabyte-per-second research and education network known as the NREN is to be established by 1996, according to the High Performance Computing Act of 1991 passed in Dec 1991. NREN, referred to as the information highway is expected to provide scientific, educational, and economic benefits for the US, and to serve as the basis for an all-encompassing National Information Infrastructure available to all citizens. An annotated bibliography presenting a representation of the literature that provides a history of the NREN as well as a sense of the evolving concerns and visions of this exciting revolution of the Information Age. Includes items that offer general and specific background information, and visions, viewpoints, and issues related to the NREN

    Abstract
Considers the possible potential for service development in public libraries offered by the Internet and describes the traditional models of network access and their lack of relevance to public libraries. Describes 2 current research projects currently being undertaken by public libraries to assess the value of the Internet to their services; ITPOINT, a project being conducted at Chelmsley Wood Library, Solihull, UK; and CLIP, the Croydon Libraries Internet peoject. Presents a range of new service paradigms and suggests that public libraries will become even more central to people's lives than they are today

    Abstract
In this research, we aim to identify factors that significantly affect the clickthrough of Web searchers. Our underlying goal is determine more efficient methods to optimize the clickthrough rate. We devise a clickthrough metric for measuring customer satisfaction of search engine results using the number of links visited, number of queries a user submits, and rank of clicked links. We use a neural network to detect the significant influence of searching characteristics on future user clickthrough. Our results show that high occurrences of query reformulation, lengthy searching duration, longer query length, and the higher ranking of prior clicked links correlate positively with future clickthrough. We provide recommendations for leveraging these findings for improving the performance of search engine retrieval and result ranking, along with implications for search engine marketing.

    Abstract
The extant literature demonstrates that the age-related digital divide prevents older adults from enhancing their quality of life. To bridge this gap and promote active aging, this study explores the interplay between social networks and older adults' use of information and communication technology (ICT). Using an action-oriented field research approach, we offered technical help (29 help sessions) to older adult participants recruited from western China. Then, we conducted content analysis to examine the obtained video, audio, and text data. Our results show that, first, different types of social networks significantly influence older adults' ICT use in terms of digital skills, engagement, and attitudes; however, these effects vary from person to person. In particular, our results highlight the crucial role of a stable and long-term supportive social network in learning and mastering ICT for older residents. Second, technical help facilitates the building and reinforcing of such a social network for the participants. Our study has strong implications in that policymakers can foster the digital inclusion of older people through supportive social networks.

    Abstract
In the light of InfoSeek's extremely lucrative contract with Disney, analyses how it has made such a success of developing an Internet business through advertising revenues, and the imporatnce of powerful search engines. Reports 2 other deals by Internet search companies: NBC's purchase of a minority stake in the portal Snap!, owned by the Computer Network, Inc. and Yahoo's acquisition of Internet Mall and Viaweb which enable it to launch Yahoo Store hosting commerce sites on behalf of other companies allowing them to sell over the Internet. Outlines the possible consequences for users of these developments and of the possibility of Internet startups selling up and quitting the scene

    Abstract
Online library catalogues and other information resources accessible through network connections offer students and scholars a variety of useful data, but present special problems to remote users. Issues facing the user of Internet-accessible systems include: knowing how to reach a system; finding out what a system contains; mastering commands and menu structures; using appropriate kinds of search terms; and choosing among systems to meet information needs effectively. These issues should be addressed by bibliographic instruction librarians and others who develop instructional units for access to systems on the Internet
