    Abstract
The term 'metadata' is becoming commonly used to refer to a variety of types of data which describe other data. A familiar example is bibliographic data, which describes a book or a serial article. Suggests that a routine definiton might be: 'metadata is data which describes attributes of a resource'. Gives some examples before looking at the Dublic Core, a simple response to the challenge of describing a wide range of network resources

    Abstract
This paper describes emerging metadata practice and standards. It gives an overview of the environments in which metatdata is used, before focusing on metadata for information resources. It outlines an approximate typology of approaches and explores different strands of metadata activity. It discusses trends in format development, metadata management, and use of search and retrieve protocols. It concludes by discussing some features of future deploament of metadata in support of network resource discovery

    Abstract
Examines metadata within the context of network information management. Defines metadata, gives an overview of resource discovery service model in the context of the Web, and gives a simple typology of resource discovery metadata and the associated characteristics of metadata formats. Describes some of the projects and services, which are now using metadata for resource discovery in a networked environment. Covers: the Dublin Core, Web indexes, projects and services using metadata, associated technologies, and use of identifiers

    Abstract
The Day was held in Oct 96 to inform about developments in dexcription of electronic documents. Metadata are necessary to aid handling of electronic network resources. A workshop in Dublin Mar 95 compiled 13 elements needed to identify a document-like object, while the Warwick workshop Apr 96 proposed a framework for electronic entries with more metadata types than the Dublin Core. The Nordic Metadata Project aims to evaluate existing metadata format; develop the Dublic Core; make conversion of the Core to the Nordic MARC format possible; and set up a metadata search service for Nordic Internet documents. At the 2nd International Conference on Conceptions of Library and Information Science, Copenhagen Oct 96 a metadata structure for research profiles on Internet homepages was proposed

    Abstract
Examines international efforts to promote metadata as a common, interactive resource description tool for the Internet. These efforts centre on the Dublin Core Element Set, but include qualifiers such as those promoted by the Canberra Qualifiers. The LoC Network Development and MARC Standards Office maintains the Dublin Core / MARC / GILS (Government Information Location Standards) crosswalk which maps the common and correlative elements of each system. Describes current international initiatives and issues. Describes the Nordic metadata project which is aiming to create the basic elements of a metadata production and utilization system based on the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set. Describes the WWW consortium efforts in this area

    Abstract
Within a digital library, collections may range from an ad hoc set of objects that serve a temporary purpose to established library collections intended to persist through time. The objects in these collections vary widely, from library and data center holdings to pointers to real-world objects, such as geographic places, and the various metadata schemes that describe them. The key to integrated use of such a variety of collections in a digital library is collection metadata that represents the inherent and contextual characteristics of a collection. The Alexandria Digital Library (ADL) Project has designed and implemented collection metadata for several purposes: in XML form, the collection metadatada 'registers' the collection with the user interface client; in HTML form, it is used for user documentation; eventually, it will be used to describe the collection to network search agents; and it is used for internal collection management, including mapping the object metadata attributes to the common search parameters of the system

    Abstract
The emerging network environment brings access to an increasing population of heterogeneous repositories. Inevitably, these, have quite diverse metadata vocabularies (categorization codes, classification numbers, index and thesaurus terms). So, necessarily, the number of metadata vocabularies that are accessible but unfamiliar for any individual searcher is increasing steeply. When an unfamiliar metadata vocabulary is encountered, how is a searcher to know which codes or terms will lead to what is wanted? This paper reports work at the University of California, Berkeley, on the design and development of English language indexes to metadata vocabularies. Further details and the current status of the work can be found at the project website http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/research/metadata/
