    Abstract
Attempts to synthesize the findings of American writers of disparate viewpoints on the social phenomena of virtual environments. Travel in virtual communities is always accompanied by tension between the real and the virtual. By observing user behaviour, the authors under review are attempting to discover what happens on networks; how a community can form from a database; how rules, conventions and new cultures are formed; and the effects of virtual environments on personality

    Abstract
Reviews the theoretical and practical aspects of subject indexing with a view to the use of new information technologies. Discusses certain characteristics particular to records and to archival practices in their relationship to those aspects. Describes the successive operations of content analysis and translation into documentary languages that constitute the indexing process. Examines the development, use and appraisal of documentary lanyguages particularly descriptor based thesaurus

    Abstract
Account of a limited experimental study at the Bibliothèque Publique d'Informations (BPI), the Paris multimedia public library, to establish a methodology for investigating user interactions with new technology. A wide range of materials are available at the BPI, including CD-ROMs and the Internet. Preliminary observations indicate that users do not follow the pattern dictated by the machine, but take approaches based on their own experience and skills. Setbacks are generally interpreted as defects in the software, not personla failure to master the system. Large scale qualitative abservation, using research methods from the social sciences, would establish a knowledge base for developing user skills to exploit multimedia resources more fully

    Abstract
Classification is the natural response to a desire for order among objects and living things and classification systems have existed since time immemorial. Discusses culture and classification, and classification in a scientific and social sciences context, and states that the invention of writing has ensured that classification systems have been passed down through the generations. Discusses the role of cultural anthropology as developed by Dürkheim and Mauss and furthered byCclaude Levi-Strauss in shedding light on the phylogenetic dimension of classification

    Abstract
The library, centre of the local network of educational, social and cultural establishments, introduced its multimedia catalogue in 1994. Records assessed by graphic interfaces include all documents and supports: users can call up accompanying text, images, audiovisual extracts, using a series of simple menus. For the librarians, maintaining the catalogue, converting documents into digital form and creating links is time consuming and needs special skills, but the impact on collection use and enhancement of the library's image are considerable, while the availability of digital copies helps conserve fragile documents

    Abstract
The social sciences documentation centre (CDSH) of the French National Research Centre initiated the publication in 1988 of a psychology periodicals catalogue, Catalogue thématiques des revues de psychologie. Discusses the problems involved in setting up such a catalogue, with specific reference to deciding how a printed source can best complement its parent on-line data base: in this case, CDSH's PSYSIS. The decision to produce the catalogue has been largely precipitated by low uptake of the data base. Considerable attention has been given to delimiting coverage (French and foreign specialist periodicals, multi-disciplinary periodicals); defining descriptors (involving decisions about who the periodical is aimed at); and what information to include under each entry. The main problems, still to be solved, concern lack of adequate software (only a relational data base would be fully satisfactory); and inadequate information about user requirements from hard copy material as opposed to on-line data bases. The results of this preliminary evaluation, albeit tentative, are of considerable relevance to the delopment of strategies for diffusing information on scientific periodicals in general.

    Abstract
Describes a study of journal use by students using university libraries for the purpose of preparing theses i.e. students who are both users and producers of information. The research was undertaken by a multidisciplinary group of researchers from information science, communication, education and economic geography from the Laboratoire d'études et de recherches appliquées en science de la societé (Laboratory for study and applied research in social science). Outlines the hypotheses concerning the team work of research students and their growth in self sufficiency thorugh user training and the methodology of the survey. Analyzes the results in terms of frequency and duration of library visits, personal subscriptions to journals, satisfaction and dissatisfaction and the demand for user training

    Abstract
For users, the catalogue is a tool to assist in satisfying information demands. Bibliographic databases raise the question of how to describe a document to facilitate retrieval. Information technology development have led to the creation of hypercatalogues, affording links to related material and other services. This necessitates improved descriptive cataloguing and also improved search interfaces to simplify user manipulation, along the lines of the Web. Given the massive output of electronic documents, the librarian's role is to select, prioritise and organise. The information society and its consequent economic consequences for the social organisation of knowledge raise the prospect of marginalisation of libraries. Catalogues enable access to knowledge as a public good, but this access must be democratic

    Abstract
Report of a study at the University of Montreal (Quebec) analysing research on the behaviour of children using information technology (online databases, CD-ROM, computerised catalogues). From a range of publications covering 6-12 year olds in the US, Canada, Europe and Oceania common features were identified: (1) children's cognitive development does not match the structured approach required for this type of information research, (2) the main abrriers were physical (e.g. using keyboard), intellectual (no capacity for abstract reasoning) and social (little access to computers); (3) in terms of natural skills, boys has greater abilities than girls. Results indicate the need to make technology more appropriate for children, and train libarrians to recognise the real capacities and limitations of children so they can teach them the basic skills

    Abstract
Compares the classification of entomological literature in the Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress Classification systems. Argues that while LCC treats the subject in more depth especially with reference to entomological taxonomy, the arrangement in DDC proves to be more logical and gives greater consideration to natural evolution. DDC allows for a greater number of possibilities when considering the geographic distribution of insects and other aspects of their study

    Abstract
While official policy in France is to encourage access to CD-ROMs through public libraries and about 28 already have or plan to offer shortly a CD-ROM service either for loan or consultation the French press has been highly critical of the medium. Discusses problems of standardization; legal aspects, acquisition policies and selection aids and the advent of the DVD
