    Navigation is a limited metaphor for hypermedia and website use that potentially constraints our understanding of human-computer interaction. Traces the emergence of the navigation metaphor and the emprical analysis of navigation measures in usability evaluation before suggesting an alternative concept to consider: shape. The shape concept affords a richer analytic tool for considering humans' use of digital documents and invokes social level analysis of meaning that are shared among discourse communities who both produce and consume the information resources

    Abstract
    Describes an experiment exploring both articulatory and cognitive aspects of marking menus for different numbers of items per menu and using different input devices (mouse; trackball and stylus). The articulatory aspects are how well subjects could execute the physical actions necessary to select from pie marking menus. Subjects were given the task of either mentally representing the menu or associating marks with the commands they invoked trough practice. Subjects' performance degraded as the number of items increased. When menus were hidden, however, subjects performance did not degrade as rapidly when menus contained even numbers of items. Subjects performed better with the mouse and stylus than with the trackball

    Abstract
    This article presents both theoretical and technical bases on which to build a 'science of text visualization'. These conceptually produce 'the ecological approach', which is rooted in ecological and evolutionary psychology. The basic idea is that humans are genetically selected from their species history to perceptually interpret certain informational aspects of natural environments. If information from text documents is visually spatialized in a manner conformal with these predilections, its meaningful interpretation to the user of a text visualization system becomes relatively intuitive and accurate. The SPIRE text visualization system, which images information from free text documents as natural terrains, serves as an example of the 'ecological approach' in its visual metaphor, its text analysis, and its spatializing procedures

    Despite the volume of research carried out into the design of database systems and the design of user interfaces, there is little cross-fertilization between the two areas. The control of user interfaces to database systems is, therfore, significantly less advanced than other aspects of DBMS design. As database functionality is used in a wider range of areas, such as design applications, the suitability of the user interface is becoming increasingly important.     Abstract
    View based searching and multi view searching using HIBROWSE proposes a new paradigm for information retrieval from bibliographic databases and database management systems. The paradigm replaces command line and form based interaction with query specification and interaction which requires the user to identify views relating to query facets of the subject of their query. Attempted to apply techniques from human-computer interaction design in the development, construction and usability evaluation of a view based searching system for a very large bibliographic database. As the development of the HIBROWSE system had been in progress before usability became a major concern, as well as the class of system being developed, greater progress towards improved usability was made by adopting a less structured development life-cycle. Examined the usefulness of a number of usability evaluation methods in the context of trying to determine the usability of designs in interactive information retrieval systems. Measurement of the subjective usability of prototypes reinforced the finding of users' difficulties in forming a useful account of the system behaviour and functionality from the training material provided, highlighted some aspects of the system that could be improved, and the greater usability of the HIBROWSE prototypes over an extant commercial bibliographic database system

    Abstract
    There is a huge amount of information and data stored in publicly available online databases that consist of large text files accessed by Boolean search techniques. It is widely held that less use is made of theses databases than could or should be the case, and that one reason for this is that potential users find it difficult to identify which databases to search, to use the various command languages of the hosts and to construct the Boolean search statements required. This reasoning has stimulated a considerable amount of exploration and development work on the construction of search interfaces, to aid the inexperienced user to gain effective access to these databases. The aim of our paper is to review aspects of the design of such interfaces; to indicate the requirements that must be met if maximum aid is to be offered to the inexperienced searcher; to spell out the knowledge that must be incorporated in an interface if such aid is to be given; to describe some of the solutions that have been implemented in experimental and operational interfaces; and to discuss some of the problems encountered. The paper closes with an extensive bibliography of references relevant to online search aids, going well beyond the items explicitly mentioned in the text. An index to software appears after the bibliography at the end of the paper
