    Abstract
This book addresses RDA along with traditional examples of cataloguing like MARC, MODS, and Dublin Core. Streaming video, Internet sites, dual-disc DVDs, blogs and listservs are just some of the rapidly emerging, and often complicated, new resources covered in this current, easy-to-follow manual. Separate chapters are dedicated to each non-print and e-resource format, and include corresponding examples to help demonstrate practical implementation of these critical new skills. A companion CD-ROM contains fully-worked out examples, models and illustrations, and acts as an important visual guide to help reinforce key concepts. In addition, a companion website provides updates on changes in RDA and other cataloguing resources and practices; links to presentations, blog posts, etc; and a means to contact the authors with questions and feedback.

    Abstract
One of the most common errors in cataloguing library materials involves miscoding of the nonfiling indicator of title fields. Notes the extent of the problem and its negative effect on searching in the library's online catalogue and surveys how librarians have approached solutions to the problems. Describes how the major library automation system address this problem

    Abstract
This study investigated name changes of women authors to determine how they were represented in indexes and cited references and identify problem areas. A secondary purpose of the study was to investigate whether or not indexing services were using authority control and how this influenced the search results. The works of eight library science authors who had published under multiple names were examined. The researchers compared author names as they appeared on title pages of publications versus in four online databases and in bibliographies by checking 380 publications and 1,159 citations. Author names were correctly provided 81.22% of the time in indexing services and 90.94% in citation lists. The lowest accuracy (54.55%) occurred when limiting to publications found in Library Literature. The highest accuracy (94.18%) occurred with works published before a surname changed. Author names in indexes and citations correctly matched names on journal articles more often than for any other type of publication. Indexes and citation style manuals treated author names in multiple ways, often altering names substantially from how they appear on the title page. Recommendations are made for changes in editorial styles by indexing services and by the authors themselves to help alleviate future confusion in author name searching.

    Abstract
Libraries, their collections, and bibliographic control are essential components of the provision of access to recorded knowledge. Cataloging is a primary method of bibliographic control. Full or traditional cataloging is very expensive, but relying on keyword searching is inadequate. Alternatives for a solution to cataloging needs for electronic resources including the use of metadata and the Dublin Core are examined. Many questions exist regarding the long-term future of today's electronic documents. Recommendations are made for preserving recorded knowledge and information in the electronic resources for future generations

    Abstract
Describes a project to create a bibliographic control system for archival quality video and audio recordings of political commercials. The project objectives were: to design a local computer searchable database; prepare item level records for the local database; and prepare collection level records for the OCLC Online Union Catalog. The collection level records are intended to alert scholars, researchers, and other potential users to the existence of the archive and to direct them to it for more powerful item level searching in the local database. Some of the cataloguing problems discussed are: choice of cataloguing tools and MARC formats; organization of the collections around the political candidate, and name authority

    Abstract
Considerable documentation, tools, and manuals are available to aid catalogers, but without some guidance, many have no idea how to use these shelves of reference guides and manuals. This bibliography is intended as a guide to the information and resources available to assist the cataloger in cataloging. The availability of each resource is given (including online availability), along with a brief summary of the type of information that each resource contains.

    Abstract
Rare materials catalogers have always been engaged in the development of rules for descriptive cataloging. In addition to the contributions made toward rules for mainstream cataloging, the rare materials community has developed a series of manuals called Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials. The fundamental principles underlying these manuals are shared with the international community and its efforts to create a common rare materials cataloging code. With the adoption of Resource Description and Access as an international standard for descriptive cataloging, the time has to come to reevaluate the potential to work toward developing common rare materials cataloging rules.

    Abstract
Reports results of a questionnaire survey of cataloguers, conducted over the AUTOCAT Internet discussion group, to determine those areas of cataloguing for which the Internet is a valuable tool and those areas for which it is not as useful. Respondents indicated 4 areas in which cataloguers use the Internet: searching the OPACs of other libraries, communicating with colleagues, accessing online cataloguing documentation and publications, and authority work. Cataloguers who found access to other libraries' OPACs did so for the following reasons: assigning call numbers and subject headings; finding full cataloguing copy from other libraries; enriching their local catalogue with notes present in records in other libraries; finding copy for foreign language items that cannot be read by library staff; and resolving difficult problems when important parts of the item are missing ar are in disarray. Some cataloguers also related processes for which they have found the Internet to not be efficient

    Abstract
Our catalog should not be called a FRBR catalog perhaps, but instead a "FRBR Inspired catalog." As such our main goal has been "practical findability," we are seeking to support the four identified user tasks of the FRBR model, or to "Search, Identify, Select, and Obtain," rather than to create a FRBR catalog, per se. By encoding as much information as possible in the MODS and MADS records we have created, we believe that useful searching will be supported, that by using unique identifiers for works and authors users will be able to identify that the entity they have located is the desired one, that by encoding expression level information (such as the language of the work, the translator, etc) users will be able to select which expression of a work they are interested in, and that by supplying links to different online manifestations that users will be able to obtain access to a digital copy of a work. This white paper will discuss previous and current efforts by the Perseus Project in creating a FRBRized catalog, including the cataloging workflow, lessons learned during the process and will also seek to place this work in the larger context of research regarding FRBR, cataloging, Library 2.0 and the Semantic Web, and the growing importance of the FRBR model in the face of growing million book digital libraries.

    Abstract
Searching and record creation in a total and integrated library system could be accomplished in a number of departments. Local organizational history will inevitably have an impact upon the placement of responsibility for these functions, but should not be the sole criterion. Several factors argue strongly for searching and record creation within the catalog department. Among these are the expertise of the catalog department in creating and maintaining bibliographic records, the increasingly similar methods of pre-order and pre-catalog searching, and the theories upon which total and integrated systems such as NOTIS are based.

    Abstract
In the Fall of 1991. the Original Cataloging Unit of The LSU Libraries conducted a survey of ARL Libraries to determine the current policies of academic libraries regarding cataloging and classification of audiovisual materials. Audiovisual materials including kits, teacher manuals, workbooks and a variety of mixed formats provide unique problems for both the librarian and cataloger . . alike. Of.the 95 libraries contacted, 75 responded. Results indicated a wide variety of policies, not only in the cataloging and classification of these materials, but also in shelving and location. With no ap arent standard, most libraries have devised their own plan to meet eir needs.

    Abstract
Discusses the process of creating bibliographic and cataloguing standards after the implementation of the VTLS (Virginia Tech Library System) in major Polish academic libraries. Examines the adoption of the USMARC format as standard for the transfer of bibliographic data in Poland and the editorial work of VTLS libraries resulting in publication of USMARC format manuals in Polish libraries. Studies the question of authority control, with special attention given to the creation of the CKHW (a common online authority database), which includes authority records for series, uniform titles, personal, corporate, geographic names and topical subject headings. Discusses the development of the KABA thesaurus, which is influenced by the RAMEAU and LoC subject indexing systems and examines the structure of subject authority MARC records, as used by Polish libraries. Considers the effect of the VTLS implementation upon the establishment of national and local library consortia in Poland
