- On 19 Aug 94 a group of readers' advisers met to discuss their problems in Utrecht Provincial Central Library in the Netherlands. The panel felt that too much emphasis had been placed on libraries' information role and that more effort should be devoted to recreational reading through organising lectures and reading groups. - Abstract
- Considers the theoretical questions involved in the indexing of fiction from several viewpoints: general principles of fiction indexing, and the making of book indexes for novels and other fictional works. Describes the work undertaken to develop fiction thesauri with particular reference to work done in Scandinavia, notably in the development of Kaunokki: the Finnish Thesaurus for Fiction, by Helsinki University Library and BTJ Group Ltd. Briefly presents notes on the structure of Kaunokkis with some examples of its practical use and user feedback from several years' experience of its use in Finnish public libraries. Concludes that the widest field for additional studies would be in the building up of special information systems for fiction.

- Abstract
- The Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC) system, extensively used in Japanese libraries, was devised in 1929. It is difficult to use NDC to classify world literature, such as fiction in English by non American, non British writers. This is not necessarily straightforward in other classification schemes but a survey of 40 Japanese university libraries, of which 24 responded, showed remarkable inconsistencies in the treatment of 22 world literature authors. NDC clearly needs updating to deal with this problem

- Abstract
- Reports results of a study which applied a typological procedure, developed by Lazairsfeld from the social sciences, to a set of qualitative data on fiction reading habits for the purpose of forming a practical typology of fiction borrowers. The data was collected from a sample of 300 readers in 2 medium sized UK public libraries over a 2 month period. The procedure, using an inductive research approach, first mapped readers along 6 dimensions of reading habits which emerged from the data frequencies of borrowing, the numbers of authors currently read, the literary/recreational orientation of reading, searching approaches usually applied, sureness (confidence) in book selection and then proceeded to reduce the number of combinations formed by these dimensions, based on their relationships. A typology of 7 types of fiction borrowers was devised: readers of particularism; readers of frequent literary pluralism; readers of infrequent literary pluralism; readers of frequent recreational pluralism; readers of infrequent recreational pluralism; readers of frequent universalism; and readers of infrequent universalism

- Abstract
- This study examines the recent trend towards the provision of subject access to imaginative literature, particularly fiction. Results of the research include: 1)an enumeration of theoretical problems associated with the provision of multi-dimensional subject access to imaginative literature; 2) an investigation of literary criticism's relevance to the subject analysis of works of imaginative literature; 3)an analysis of the denotative and connotative topical elements constituting works of imaginative literature; and, 4) an evaluation of the non-standard practice of formulating access points from criticism.

- Abstract
- The paper discusses the consistency of fiction indexing of library professionals and patrons based on an empirical test. Indexing was carried out with a Finnish fictional thesaurus and all of the test persons indexed the same five novels. The consistency of indexing was determined to be low; several reasons are postulated. Also an algorithm for typified indexing of fiction is given as well as some suggestions for the development of fiction information retrieval systems and content representation.

- Abstract
- The subject analysis of narrative texts of fiction is complex; the methodological model of identification of concepts as elaborated for scientific texts is not applicable to fiction. It is proposed here that theoretical and methodological use of the Generative Trajectory of Meaning postulated by Greimas may contribute to the identification of aboutness in narrative texts of fiction.

- Abstract
- The objective of the paper is to analyse the information (communication) process of fiction in order to increase our understanding of the different actors and factors involved in information processing. The methodology is that of the grounded theory, where previous studies of information process and fiction content representation are compared with the results of an empirical study in which library patrons and library professionals were asked to index and abstract five different kinds of novels.
