    Abstract

    Abstract
Many retrievalexperiments are intended to discover ways of improving performance, taking the results obtained with some particular technique as a baseline. The fact that substantial alterations to a system often have little or no effect on particular collections is puzzling. This may be due to the initially poor seperation of relevant and non-relevant documents. The paper presents a procedure for characterizing this seperation for a collection, which can be used to show whether proposed modifications of the base system are likely to be useful.

    Abstract
In 1975 the Library at Preston Polytechnic undertook the task of reorganising and developing a collection of slides previously in the custody of the School of Art and Design. Circumstances dictated that the collection be organised for maximum use and minimal maintenance. The slides have been classified by 18th Dewey and housed in transparent sheets of pockets suspended in filing cabinets, enabling borrowers to browse and help themselves

    Abstract
A summary of a survey of the use of the DDC in libraries of the United States and Canada is presented. (5% of alle libraries in the United States and Canada use DDC; of these are at least 75% use the most recent full or abridges edition. Librarians wish to have DDC revised continuously, but they do not want the meanings of numbers changed. Any assistance that can be provided in the application of DDC is welcome. Most of the larger libraries do not believe zhat the current index provides sufficient assistance. Divisions needing revision are listed with an index number reflecting priority. DDC is seen to be warmly regarded by librarians in general and by public service librarians in particular

    Abstract
A method is outlined which would permit a large number of libraries of all types to use centralised cataloguing facilities without the need for their own automatic data processing equipment and outlay. The method is seen as an alternative to the OCLC on-line data bank, and permits the ordering of printed catalogue cards by machine-readable but hand-prepared data cards, such as the loan cards which readers at the Münster library are at present required to complete. The proposed sequence of ordering is set out in 11 stages

    Abstract
Bibliographical problems caused by geographic names in subject vataloging are examnied with a view toward determining procedures for establishing correct headings when changes of name occur and deciding upon the type of provisions to be made in subject catalog maintenance. Examples of typical changes of geographic names in Africa and suggested information cards for the subject catalog are provided
