    Abstract
Describes ONE, OPAC Network in europe, a project supported by the EU Telematics programme and based in Norway. There are 15 partners in the project from 8 European countries, representing different types of institutions, such as national libraries, software houses, museums and universities. The main aim is to create an operational network service for all types of users of libraries in Europe, using the Z39.50 protocol, and to establish Implementors' Agreements for libraries. The project is planned to last for 30 months, and is divided into 5 phases

    Abstract
This resarch letter discusses online cataloge (OPAC) research in Europe. It concentrates on experimental research in OPAC development although some OPAC-related research is also included. Four general areas are identified: interaction/interface design, subject access, functional research, and OPAC networks. Three operational OPACs, not available outside Europe, are also discussed

    Abstract
OPAC Network in Europe (ONE) is a project aimed at providing users with better ways to access library OPACs and national catalogues and which will stimulate and facilitate internetworking between libraries in Europe. The project is based on SR/Z39.50 standards which enable users to search widely different computer systems across networks and offer end users the promise of greater ease of use through a solution to the proliferation of different user interfaces to library catalogues

    Abstract
An increasing number of library user studies are employing ethnographic techniques as an alternative to more traditional qualitative methods such as surveys. Such techniques, however, are only beginning to see significant application to catalog user studies. Beginning with a discussion of the applied ethnographic method and its current usage within the field of Library and Information Science research, this article will assess methods that have traditionally been applied to studies of catalog users and present the case for the potential of an ethnographic approach for future catalog evaluation and design.

    Abstract
The 10 contributions are concerned with the nature, composition, and implementation of the cognitive interaction between the human and the computer, through the development of intelligent interfaces. The topic is addressed from a variety of theoretical, empirical, and design perspectives, by authors who are currently carrying out research in interface design and related issues. The text is organised into sections on theory, design, and case studies, together with a critique of the intelligent interface concept. Relevant recent advances in artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, psychophysiology and computer science are emphasized

    Abstract
Presents the selected findings of a research project based on the British Library Network Online Public Access Catalogue (NOPAC) carried out in the department of information and library management at the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, UK over the academic year 1994/95. Data was collected by means of interviews with NOPAC users especially on use made of the NOPAC and on attitudes towards the NOPAC's interface. Discusses the views of users as they relate to: display features; mode of interaction; help/user assistance; extra features available; and usability. Lists important points which emerged from the survey concerning the NOPAC service

    Abstract
Subject access to monographs through online public access catalogs (OPACs) has always been a major concern for large research and/or academic libraries. Academic library practice of providing subject access to monographs has proven inadequate, especially in the case of composite works. Many techniques have been proposed to enhance subject treatment of monographs in OPACs. This article briefly reviews these efforts in the past and presents the case of adding Tables of Contents as one of the Most useful and probably also one of the Most costeffective ways of improving subject access to Monographs in an academic environment.

    Abstract
Examines the use of the Z39.50 Information Retrieval protocol for provision of access to its collections. Z39.50 offers a translation of different search engines developed by library systems suppliers and online database hosts. Traces its development and describes its abstraction and metalanguage, and the TCP/IP and OSI layer. It is being further developed in project ONE - OPAC Network in Europe, and European Union Library Plan project which began in Jan 95, of which the British Library is a partner. It aims to link national library catalogues in an open standards and telecommunications network, and to achieve interoperability by use of Z39.50. Describes the project so far, agreements made, and future developments

    Abstract
By the mid 1980s online bibliographic systems retrieved excessively large sets. Conversely, with standard Boolean systems, searches retrieved commonly nothing or too few records. In Nov. 92, 32% of searches yielded nothing from a retrieval set averaging 98. Offers solutions to these problems using MELVYL as a case study. Examines how non topical data such as date, language and location of document can improve topical searches. Explains OASIS and front end phototyping. Discusses adaptive retrieval, strategic commands, expanded retrieval and developments of OASIS. Covers aggregation of filtered sets, related terms, automatic progressive truncation, the SUMMARIZE LIBRARIES command, filing and filtering and collection analysis

    Abstract
Reviews the development of the British Library OPAC services leading up to the launch of OPAC 97, offering access to 9 mio bibliographic records and attempts to show the value of a user centred approach in the project management involved in developing such a service as recommended by Human Computer Interaction (HCI) studies. Reviews the evaluation studies of the Online Catalogue, the Network OPAC, a web prototype interface and of OPAC 97 and discusses the results in relation to the OPAC 97 project. Although the OPAC 97 interface made use of various HCI recommendations, user feedback sometimes contradicted these in specific instances, revealing the value of detailed user evaluation in developing services

    Abstract
This study measured the speed, error rates, and subjective evaluation of arrow-jump keys, a jump-mouse, number keys, and a touch screen in an interactive encyclopedia. A summary of previous studies comparing selection devices and strategies is presented to provide the background for this study. We found the touch screen to be the fastest in time, the least accurate but the overall favorite of the participants. The results are discussed and improvements are suggested accordingly
