    Abstract
    Business opportunities created by the Internet economy and new business methods have triggered the development of the electronic or e-marketplace, and vice versa. To generate competitive new products/services, Internet firms need to have access to detailed technological innovations to compete. Despite the wealth of literature on e-marketplaces, research on patent analyses in e-marketplaces is scarce. The patent is a crucial indicator of the technological competitiveness of a company or a nation. This study provides a preliminary step in depicting a holistic picture of technological innovations associated with e-marketplace patents. This study analyzes patents issued during the period of 1990-2002 from major databases; hence, it provides the first empirical study on e-marketplaces and related innovations holistically. A comprehensive set of statistical patent analyses and a discussion on e-marketplaces' technology by means of a patent map analysis are presented.

    Abstract
    Recent studies have found organizational learning capacity to be a key factor in influencing organizational assimilation and exploitation of knowledge-intensive innovations. Despite its increasing importance, the impact of organizational learning capacity an technology assimilation is not well understood. Distilling from extant works an organizational learning and technology assimilation, this study identifies four components of organizational learning capacity, namely, systems orientation, organizational climate for learning orientation, knowledge acquisition and utilization orientation, and information sharing and dissemination orientation. The authors subject these components to structural equation modeling analyses to better understand their structure and dimensionality. The analyses strongly support the proposed four major dimensions underlying organizational learning capacity. Organizational learning capacity, as a higher-order factor, has a significant impact an attitude towards organizational adoption of knowledge-intensive innovations. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

    Abstract
    Despite its young age compared to similar programs in the United States, cataloging instruction in Israel has also been transformed to reflect the changes in the work done in libraries based on technological innovations and conceptions held by those involved in academia. Cataloging instruction in Israel is marked by a number of factors: * There has always been a division, carried through to today, between distinct and independent courses on various aspects of cataloging: A course on classification, a course on descriptive cataloging and a course on indexing. Even today, these courses are requirements in all of the instructional frameworks, though the length of the course has been reduced over the years * Over the years additional courses have been introduced as a reflection of the technological developments and work in the field * The majority of courses are now taught in computer labs * Switch to instruction by academics and not by librarians, workers in the field, as was customary for many decades * Focus of instruction in university departments on theory and understanding of concepts.

    Abstract
    The current library bibliographic infrastructure was constructed in the early days of computers - before the Web, XML, and a variety of other technological advances that now offer new opportunities. General requirements of a modern metadata infrastructure for libraries are identified, including such qualities as versatility, extensibility, granularity, and openness. A new kind of metadata infrastructure is then proposed that exhibits at least some of those qualities. Some key challenges that must be overcome to implement a change of this magnitude are identified.

    Abstract
    This case study details the evolution of descriptive practices and standards used in the Mount Holyoke College Archives and the Five College Finding Aids Access Project, discusses the relationship of Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and the MARC standard in reference to archival description, and addresses the challenges and opportunities of transferring data from one metadata standard to another. The study demonstrates that greater standardization in archival description allows archivists to respond more effectively to technological change.

    Abstract
    Staff costs for cataloging have declined at Iowa State University Library. This is demonstrated by data from a longitudinal time and cost study begun in 1987. We discuss the national developments, technological advancements, and reengineering efforts that have supported greater cataloging effectiveness and quality. We use the ISU findings as an example of a nationwide phenomenon resulting from the remarkable ability of catalogers to share work through national bibliographic utilities.

    Abstract
    As an acceptable proxy for innovative activity, patents have become increasingly important in recent years. Patents and patent citations have been used for construction of technology indicators. This article presents an alternative to other citation-based indicators, i.e., the patent h-index, which is borrowed from bibliometrics. We conduct the analysis on a sample of the world's top 20 firms ranked by total patents granted in the period 1996-2005 from the Derwent Innovations Index in the semiconductor area. We also investigate the relationships between the patent h-index and other three indicators, i.e., patent counts, citation counts, and the mean family size (MFS). The findings show that the patent h-index is indeed an effective indicator for evaluating the technological importance and quality, or impact, for an assignee. In addition, the MFS indicator correlates negatively and not significantly with the patent h-index, which indicates that the social value of a patent is in disagreement with its private value. The two indicators, patent h-index and MFS, both provide an overview of the value of patents, but from two different angles.

    Abstract
    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to develop a theoretical framework of an integrated digital library (DL) system based on knowledge management (KM) process. Design/methodology/approach - The study is based on viewpoints, review of existing concepts and frameworks of DL and KM, and the result of an interview of nine DL practitioners world-wide. The respondents are purposively selected from the participants" lists of two international conferences held in 2008. The interview is conducted through e-mail using a short, structured and open-ended questionnaire. Findings - The study finds some significant overlaps between DL and KM and argues that a generic KM process of acquisition, organization, storage and retrieval, and dissemination of knowledge with receiving feedbacks can suitably be fitted in DL. Thus an integrated DL system can be consisted of digital resources, technological infrastructure, experience and expertise, DL services and a KM process. The integration of KM can add value to developing a knowledge-based culture, management of intellectual assets, promotion of knowledge sharing, innovations in DL services and a strong leadership position for DL. Research limitations/implications - The research presents theoretical viewpoints of DL and KM, and the model, therefore, demands for practical investigation. Practical implications - The study suggests the adoption of KM process in DL system to enhance its effectiveness. Originality/value - The proposed model is an original work and theoretically, it would contribute to the advancement of academic debate in both the areas of DL and KM.
