- This article discusses the major catalog use studies that have been conducted in the United States and Great Britain. - Abstract
- Summarizes findings of an international study on information-seeking habits and preferences: With extensive input from hundreds of librarians and OCLC staff, the OCLC Market Research team developed a project and commissioned Harris Interactive Inc. to survey a representative sample of information consumers. In June of 2005, we collected over 3,300 responses from information consumers in Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States. The Perceptions report provides the findings and responses from the online survey in an effort to learn more about: * Library use * Awareness and use of library electronic resources * Free vs. for-fee information * The "Library" brand The findings indicate that information consumers view libraries as places to borrow print books, but they are unaware of the rich electronic content they can access through libraries. Even though information consumers make limited use of these resources, they continue to trust libraries as reliable sources of information.

- Abstract
- An ongoing thread in information retrieval research has been the exploration of user goals (or information needs, or problems) on information retrieval systems. It has been suggested that an understanding of goals and their role in the information retrieval interaction can provide insight into appropriate retrieval strategies, relevant documents, and general system design. This article reports on empirical findings concerning goals of users searching an OPAC at a northeastern United States university. These findings were generated during a large inductive and qualitative study of users' interactions with the OPAC. It was found that respondents came to the OPAC to search for a variety of course- or degree-related projects in which they were engaged. Respondent goals were not greatly modified during the course of these interactions. A set of situational elements associated with the respondent's goal was also identified. The implications of these findings for OPAC design and the training of informational professionals are discussed

- Amstelveen Public Library in the Netherlands introduced the online Kid's Catalog in 1997 to enable young users to access the library's catalogue. The system was developed in the United States and has been translated into Dutch for use in Amstelveen. The system enables users to access the catalogue through a menu of icons or by typing in author, title and subject headings. The system can recognise typing errors and offer corrected headings. - The Oregon State Library, USA, provides free, statewide access to its online system to libraries and government agencies. The Oregon Public Access Catalog (ORPAC) includes more than 20 databases and files besides online catalogues. Most of these external databases are Oregon state government state agency information resources. These include the full text of the oregon Revised Statutes, the Oregon Administrative Rules, the Opinions of the State Appelate Courts, and a database of all vacant state government positions. This service provide public access to public information and has made the ORPAC one of the most widely known state government information services

- Abstract
- A survey was conducted during 1987 to identify how online catalog users interact with various aspects of the catalog's authority control structure. Questionnaires were sent to major online catalog system vendors and to selected university libraries and networks known to have developed in-house online catalogs; additional copies were distributed to ACIG meeting participants during the ALA conference in San Francisco, June 1987. Twenty-one usable responses were received, twelve describing commercially available systems and nine from lacally developed systems.

- Networks allow different users from outside the library to have remote access to library catalogues. These remote users may face problems that differ from the OPAC users' in the library. They may not be comfortable with the computer technology and may not be familiar with the OPAC of the library. Libraries should offer different support services from those provided to on-site users. - Telecommunications networks and standard protocols for information retrieval aid physical access to geographically scattered libraries. - Abstract
- Current online catalogs have problems providing reasonable subject access, often resulting in searches with too few or too many hits. These problems can be improved by enhancing MARC records, building semantic networks through cross-references, and linking subject headings to classification numbers. This paper describes a pilot project to design a hypertext search engine using these principles

- Most of the criteria proposed to date for the evaluation of OPACs focus on evaluation of their retrieval function. Argues that the storage function is more important because the quality of information retrieval systems is dependent on the quality of stored information as well as the description and depth of indexing of stored information. States that OPACs should therefore be evaluated from the perspectives of both storage and retrieval functions. Examines 4 studies on criteria for evaluating OPACs and suggests a new evaluation framework based on the work of C.R. Hildreth
