    Abstract
Programs for converting bibligraphic data are not only of interest to libraries but also to researchers compiling bibliographies. However, few programs are currently available. In choosing a suitable program care must be taken to ensure that it is capable of identifying and converting all fields likely to be encountered, to the required format. Optical scanning can provide a convenient solution for converting printed output to machine-readable format. Increasing acceptance of standardised formats will facilitate exchange of data

    Abstract
Hitherto, the ISBD for nonbook materials and computer files have provided standards for cataloguing electronic media. However, new technology, particular digitisation with its facility to create multimedia resources, has highlighted the need for new bibliographic standards. In the Netherlands the Royal Library, Pica and SURFnet, in 1993, implemented a project to create standards for networked information resources. The results will provide useful guidelines unitl the publication of an ISBD for electronic resources

    Abstract
In the Netherlands dissatisfaction with the classification schedules and subject indexing headings assigned to records by the National Bibliographic Service has led librarians to re-arrange their collections in broad reader-interest categories. With the introduction of online public catalogues in libraries and their provision of multiple entry terms for each item, the problems of conflictions in shelf location are largely eliminated. The internal layout of each library may place constraints on such radical reorganisation. Howver, the merging of the children's and adults' sections can be useful in offering children a greater depth of knowledge. A further useful arrangement may be the combination of fiction and non-fiction collections in broad subject catalogues

    Abstract
As the number of publications on the WWW grows exponentially there is an urgent need for a standardised system of bibliographic description. In the Netherlands the PICA national union catalogue has created WebCAT to catalogue online publications from universities and research institutes. However, use of WebCAT is restricted to participating institutions. The DutchESS (Dutch Electronic Subject Service) and SURF-ACE Search Enginges projects provide a partial solution to the problems on indexing online publications. The ultimate solution lies in the development of standardised metadata architecture

    Abstract
As a result of the growing pace of developments in the electronic information industry the EC Commission invited applications for the creation of a data base of producers and their services. Tha contract was awarded to the European Information Industry Association, which in collaboration with ECHO (European Commission Host Organisation) has created the I'M GUIDE (Information Market Guide) service. Information on the products, services and manufacturer is contributed by a network of correspondents. The data bank is updated fortnightly and contains more than 4.000 references. The system is available for online access 24 hours daily. It offers natural language searching in English, french and Italian and a menu-driven system in the 9 EC languages

    Abstract
Despite the extensive use of automation for archive management the creation of ISAD(G) (General International Standard Archival Description) was only accepted in January 1992. A special adaptation of the ISBD had already enabled a start to be made on creating MARC format records for archive collections. ISAD(G) will facilitate the exchange of data among collections. Whether the new standard will be suitable for all forms of archive depends on the willingness of archivists to adopt new technology

    Abstract
Modern online information systems have been criticized as being too complicated for the average information seeker. To overcome this problem interfaces have been developed to assist users at all stages of the information transfer process from searching to analysis and evaluation of retrieval data. However, the effectiveness of an interface will depend on the skills of the user. Further development of interfaces will be aided by the use of Windows and mouse controlled systems

    Abstract
For literature searchers who create extensive bibliographies, special software is available. Among the most popular of these packages is ProCite from Research Information Systems. The system uses workforms with predefined fields for author, title etc. Through its BilioLink conversion program ProCite enables data to be downloaded from other files. Advantages of the package are its ease of use and links to WWW applications. However, index browsing is clumsy and there is little control over input errors

    Abstract
The library of the Prince Leopold Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium is a specialised research library with some 14.000 books and 550 current periodical subscirptions. Since 1990 the library has used Bib/SEARCH (version 2.9) library management program to provide online catalogue and database information facilities. The system is structured to enable easy transfer of data from other sources, and fields may be defined according to the library' needs. Despite minor problems such as the indexing routine, experience at the Institute has been positive. A new version of the system is currently under development

    Abstract
The universal classification schemes developed in the 19th century are a direct response to the social changes of that era. However, the increasing use of automation in libraries has highlighted the need fir greater precision in hierarchical structures. A thesaurus of used and related headings can be employed to show the spatial relationship of semantic terms. The resulting search profile can be further enhanced by the addition of citation weighting. To assist users to define searches more accurately libraries using large general classification schemes should consider adding supplementary classification data to records

1st in a series or reports by the IRT (Internet Retrieval Tools) Working Party in the Netherlands. The group was formed at the start of 1997 to attempt to identify which search engines were most suitable for different ypes of enquiries. Compilers of search engines frequently give little information about the data covered by their service and how their service deals with metadata. Preliminary tests show considerable variations in approach; future tests will examine the use of ranking and currency of systems
