    Abstract
The growing interest in end user or direct patron access to on-line bibliographic databases is reviewed with references to online catalogues, databases, and CD-ROMs. The literature of end user searching is surveyed with notes on: user training, software search aids, end user services in libraries: characterisation of end user searches; the role of librarians; and CD-ROMs as end user media

    Abstract
NISO draft standard Z39.50 (sometimes called the "Linked Systems Protocol") provides a standard for linking computers to permit the searching and retrieval of machine-readable bibliographic and authority records. The concept, context, status, and potential of the Linked Systems Protocol are reviewed in relation to the historical development of bibliographies and library catalogs. The functions of a fully developed bibliographic Linked Systems Protocol are summarized and shown to have extensive implications for scholarship, bibliographic access, and the notion of a national database. Effective international use of such a protocol would require the solution of several traditional problems.

    Abstract
Recent research shows that users of online catalogs find subject searching difficult, that characteristics of subject searches are qualitatively different from those of known-item searches, and that some design features of online catalogs appear to perform better than others for topical searching. It has been recommended that system designers develop different approaches, or interfaces, for different kinds of searching. This paper revies available design techniques from a subject searching perspective, including various methods of indexing bibliographic records, processing and correcting user input, searching the database, and displaying search results. The review concludes that there are many alternative approaches, each with strenghts and weaknesses, and combining techniques in new ways may have unknown results, but many promising methods are nonetheless available now to make more effective use of the subject information in current bibliographic records.

    Abstract
Examines searching capabilities and search results relating to the same full text data base made available by: a host that offers a command language designed for searching bibliographic data bases and a host that provides search facilities that have been specially designed for full text retrieval. Moreover, the CD-ROM format of an encyclopedia is compared with the equivalent on-line version of the same work, Academic American Encyclopedia. Results reveal that it is easier to search on those systems that offer searching facilities which have been specially designed for full text retrieval.

    Abstract
An experiment was conducted using 3 data bases in library and information science - Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA), Information Science Abstracts and ERIC - to investigate some of the main factors affecting on-line searching: effectiveness of search vocabularies, combinations of fields searched, and overlaps among databases. Natural language, controlled vocabulary and a mixture of natural language and controlled terms were tested using different fields of bibliographic records. Also discusses a comparative evaluation of single and multi-data base searching, measuring the overlap among data bases and their influence upon on-line searching.

    Abstract
Paper presented at a symposium on 'Implementing the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT): Controlled Vocabulary in the Extended MARC format', held at the 1989 Annual Conference of the Art Libraries Society of North America. The only way to get bibliographic records on to campus on-line library catalogues, and slide records on the national bibliographic utilities, is through the use of MARC. Discusses the importance of having individual slide and photograph records on the national bibliographic utilities, and considers the obstacles which currently make this difficult. Discusses mapping to MARC from data base management systems.
