    Abstract
OCLC's Internet Resources Project investigated the nature of electronic textual information available through remote Internet access, focusing on the practical and theoretical problems associated with creating MARC records. Details the project methods and results. The findings reveal aspects of electronic information objects available via the Internet, provide a taxonomy of the file types available via FTP, and a substantive body of data on the suitability of conventional methods for providing bibliographic description and access for Internet information objects. Makes recommendations for cataloguing Internet resources

    Abstract
Libraries can add value to Internet resources by adding them to the library's catalogue in a manner consistent with the other resources held within the collection. Reports on OCLC studies into cataloguing Internet resources and accessing electronic periodicals. Existing retrieval methods on the Internet are limited because of shallow directory structures and idiosyncratic naming conventions. Catalogue entries for electronic resources need to provide a complete description of the access methodology if they are to satisfactorily connect remote users without the immediate possibility of backup from reference staff

    Abstract
Libraries have been integrating active server pages (ASP) with Web-based databases for searching and retrieving electronic information for the past five years; however, a literature review reveals that a more complete description of modifying data through the Web interface is needed. At the Texas A&M University Libraries, a Web database of Internet links was developed using ASP, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) to facilitate use of online resources. The implementation of the Internet Links database is described with focus on its data management functions. Also described are other library applications of ASP technology. The project explores a more complete approach to library Web database applications than was found in the current literature and should serve to facilitate reference service.

    Abstract
At the core of cataloguing Internet resources are the cataloguing values of description and access. Shows how cataloguing Internet resources can be folded into the duties of a cataloguing department. Reviews practical aspects of their cataloguing. Covers: obtaining support from library's administration for initiating the activity, outlining responsibilities, training and workflow issues, guides to cataloguing, initial steps and choices, creating the bibliographic description, choosing access points, subject analysis and classification, and electronic location and access

    Abstract
The knowledge structures that form traditional library classification schemes hold great potential for improving resource description and discovery on the Internet and for organizing electronic document collections. The advantages of assigning subject tokens (classes) to documents from a scheme like the DDC system are well documented

    Abstract
Examines the responsibilities and obligations of libraries in an electronic environment. These include: ensuring access, mostly free, to the Internet; training the public to use it; developing research and navigational tools; using the Internet as a gateway; participating in the organization of data; providing access to the documentary heritage; collection development; forging links with other database producers; providng a forum for dissemination projects; speaking out against censorship; and involving users and the local community in the development of databases

    Abstract
OCLC is engaged on an Internet cataloguing project. It is focusing on exploring the role of library standards, and systems, and developing InterCAT catalog (a searchable catalog that unifies bibliographic description with direct access to remote electronic resources). Discusses reasons for and against cataloguing Internet resources

    Abstract
Describes Oslo University's Informatics Library's and Institute's project on making Institute publications electronically accessible, using the PostScript or HTML formats and the WWW. Examines the fields relevant to cataloguing of the electronic documents. Some documents are available both in physical and electronic form and links are entered to Internet resources which relate to the physical document catalogued. Hopes that others will catalogue electronic documents for their parent institutions and widen the bibliographic description by adding external Internet resources

    Abstract
Reports on work undertaken by OCLC in the development of a core bibliographic description, for records and resources available on the Internet, sufficiently simple so as to be suitable for use by authors not schooled in conventional cataloguing. Referes particularly to the Dublin Core of 13 data elements designed to provide a description scheme to be included directly in WWW documents and to promote self describing documents on the net. Notes the work of the National Document and Information Service (NDIS) Project, and other, similar projects; including the Open Information Locator Project (http://www.dstc.edu.au/RDU/reports/oil/adl96.ps). Summarizes the work of the ALCTS Task Force on Bibliographic Access in the Electronic Environment in defining the problems and solutions associated with bibliographic control of electronic collections (http://www.lib.virginia.edu/alcts). Concludes with an update on the Internet Engineering Task Force Meeting, regarding: HTTP; HTML; Uniform Resource Names (URN) and Uniform Resource Characteristics (URC) (http://purl.oclc.org); and Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS) (http://www.w3.org/pub/www.pics)

    Abstract
The number of resources on the Internet continues to expand exponentially, but finding appropriate resources is still a fragmented, random operation. Argues that traditional library expertise in bibliographic description and access should be applied to the management of this emerging body of material. In the process, cataloguers will be able to assess the adequacy of current tools (cataloguing codes, computerized cataloguing formats, integrated library systems) for providing access to Internet resources and will contribute credibly to design or redesign of access tools. Outlines the major issues that must be considered in cataloguing electronic resources

    Abstract
Considers the various approaches that have been taken by different groups to collect, organise, archive, disseminate and preserve electronic resources on the Internet with particular reference to the traditional library cataloguing approach. Demonstrates the benefits of uisng the MARC formats, the importance of the integration of information resources, and the guarantee of public access as the major reasons for using the traditional cataloguing approach to organize Internet resources. Examines the advantages of the MARC format in terms of: standard communication formats; simple record structure for all levels of description; flexible display formats; multiple access points; full bibliographic description; integration of all kinds of information resources into library catalogues; and guarateed public access. Reviews the issues involved in cataloguing information on the Internet with particular reference to the OCLC Internet Cataloguing Project and the implications for standard library activities, such as: collection development; cataloguing; public services; and local computer support

    Abstract
Describes the 26 entires to the 1996 Australian society of Indexers' (AusSI) Prize for Web indexes. Entries showed a variety of approaches to Web indexing and included: linear back-of-book style indexes; annotated bibliographies; Yahoo-style hierachical sites; and beautiful castles with rooms full of links. Entries were judges on ease of use of the index for a novice user, content and breadth of coverage, and usefulness at getting information that could answer questions. The winner was the Australian Parliamentary Library Index by Alan Wilson, an index to the information on the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library's Web site and from othe departments of the Australian Parliament. A brief description of each entrey is given together with its URL and the compiler's email address. All entries can be reached on the Web

    Abstract
Outlines telemuseum services status and international organizations founded on the basis of the RAMA project (Remote Access to Museum Archives) which aims to offer validated services to users through Internet networks on the basis of the distributed multimedia databases belonging to the museums. Gives an introduction and overall description of RAMA, describes its market framework for multimedia services in the cultural field, its technical approach, user access and handling, configuration, structure and data formats, and networking choices. Outlines developments which have arisen out of the project
