    Abstract
Description of the online catalogue (OLCA) development abd the subject access potency (Controlled and free term indexing, classified approach, subject indication costs, Boolean searching). The subject access research needs are outlined as well as the measures to be taken towards putting the Delft University of Technology Library catalogues online (AUBID-SSX project, subjects access point file, quantitative evaluation) The importance of the use of controlled vocabulary is stressed. The incorporations of a concordance between subject headingsa nd the local library classification is described

    Abstract
In the past decade the value of newspapers as a source of information on the history of a nation has been recognized on both the national and international levels. Numerous national programs for the preservation of and access to newspaper collections were launched. The bibliographic component represents the most important task in each of these programs. The process of the formulation of national standards and policies for the bibliographic and holdings description of newspapers is discussed. The United States Newspaper Program and the Decentralized Program for Canadian Newspapers are given as examples. At the international level, the draft guidelines for the bibliographic description of newspapers prepared by the IFLA Working Group on Newspapers are analyzed. The importance of cooperation and exchange of information between the national and international projects involving newspapers is emphasized.

    Abstract
Edited version of a report to the Australian Library and Information Association on the Conference on classification theory in the computer age, Albany, New York, 18-19 Nov 88, and on the meeting of the Dewey Editorial Policy Committee which preceded it. The focus of the Editorial Policy Committee Meeting lay in the following areas: browsing; potential for improved subject access; system design; potential conflict between shelf location and information retrieval; and users. At the Conference on classification theory in the computer age the following papers were presented: Applications of artificial intelligence to bibliographic classification, by Irene Travis; Automation and classification, By Elaine Svenonious; Subject classification and language processing for retrieval in large data bases, by Diana Scott; Implications for information processing, by Carol Mandel; and implications for information science education, by Richard Halsey.

    Abstract
A broad and diverse compendium of underutilized information is available in pamphlet format in the academic library. Its enhanced use is impeded by the lack of an effective means of catalog access. The traditional library practice of accessing pamphlets by a single subject heading assignment/arrangement greatly limits accessibility. The alternative of full cataloging regularly accorded books is generally provided only for selected pamphlets for reasons of cost. It is suggested that the provision of AACR2 first level of description may be a desirable and practical compromise between single subject assignment and full cataloging. The availability and ease of access to the information required for inclusion in cataloging of this type is examined based on a survey of pamphlets cataloged for the collections of the University Libraries at California State University, Northridge.

    Abstract
Bibliographic control does not differ in substance from one type of material to another. Therefore it is not possible to separate the bibliographic control of music materials entirely from the larger domain of bibliographic control activity. The literature of music librarianship is examined for relevant theoretical explanations. Specific problems of description and access are used to show that, in general, the requirements for bibliographic control of music fit neatly into the theoretical structure for all bibliographic control. The primary purpose of descriptive cataloging of musical objects is to identify and differentiate among objects in a library collection. Where the concept of responsibility is relevant, access is provided through the names of composers or performers. Systematic access is provided through co-equal facets: medium, manifestation, and form.

    Abstract
The development and use of the MARC Archival and Manuscript Control (AMC) format is described. The format's unique characteristics stem largely from the needs of the archivl community for both a uniform means of control of materials at the collection level and a powerful tool for exchanging information about archival holdings. Uniques aspects of AMC cataloguing are described, including differing approaches to access points, form of entry, title, physical description, notes, subject headings, and call numbers.

    Abstract
Once collections of microcomputer software are established in a library, they grow like wildfire, requiring bibliographic control. Control should have been furnished by AACR2, however, Chapter 9, designed to deal with macroor minicomputer software, was difficult to apply to microcomputer software. Responding to demand from the field, a Task Force of ALA's Committee Cataloging: Description and Access devised Guidelines for Using AACR2 Chapter 9 for Cataloging Microcomputer Software, which was approved at the 1984 Midwinter Conference and is now available for purchase from RTSD. The Guidelines deal with three problems raised by application of Chapter 9 to microcomputer software: teminology; description of the physical manifestation of an item; and notes describing related hardware. A fourth problem concerns which materials are covered by the Guidelines. Each of these is explored and evaluated.

    Abstract
Because rare book cataloging stresses the unique and characteristics of the species in special collections, it tends to be eclectic, chaotic even, in resisting standards and uniform description. Rare book librarians have therefore sought alternatives to AACR2 for bibliographic description at more detailed levels of control than this standard. Slowly a hierarchy of levels for the bibliographic control of books, manuscript and printed, is evolving which has a counterpart in archival control. As librarians choose appropriate levels of description for rare books and manuscripts, cost considerations must play their proper role. A survey of the major rare book and manuscript repositories in the U.S. and Canada provides comparative data for the cost of cataloging at levels higher than AACR2 and delineates other characteristics of RBSC operations for personnel, compensation, unit costs, backlogs, regional variance, standards in practice, accommodation of automation and networking, methods of providing intellectual access, and acquisition activities. This study discusses the concept of phased cataloging and collection management but suggests that current practices are not yet rationalized into an integrated system for the bibliographic control of rare books and archival control of manuscripts and records.

    Abstract
Bibliographic records available in WLN (Western Library Network, formerly Washington Library Network) for works which are both by and about authors or artists are evaluated to show the inconsistency in the assignment by descriptive and subject catalogers of subject headings and author access points. The physical description and classification of these works is also examined in relation to its relevance in online use/retrieval. Bibliographic records created over a decade or more illustrate this persistent problem of access which affects retrieval in both DIALOG and WLN online systems as well as in card catalogs. The article includes suggestions for catalogers, particularly those working with art or literature subjects, to improve the situation.

    Abstract
The use of interactive videodiscs for preserving, presenting and retrieving pictorial collections in Australia was pioneered at the New South Wales Government Printing Office, Sydney. This project has now stored some 200.000 historical photographs on interactive videodisc, associated with sophisticated microcomputer data bases using the specially developed Just Image software. Videodisc systems to retrieve pictorial material are being used to preserve and present the pictorial collections of various Australian libraries and museums, and standards for the description and indexing of photographs are being developed.
