    Abstract
Globes are a unique cartographic format with special characteristics that need to be considered when providing bibliographic description and access. This article describes the challenges and characteristics of cataloging globes. It provides practical assistance in applying specific MARC 21 fields for globes. Special consideration is given to those fields that are unique to cataloging globes including: physical description areas, title, and subject access.

    Abstract
The 1st International CDS/ISIS congress was organizes by the Columbian Association of CDS/ISIS users in cooperation with the Unesco regional office in Caracas, Venezuela. Reviews the programme including a detailed description of the CDS/ISIS library automation system which has 16.000 registered users and which can be run under MS-DOS, VAS/VMS, UNIX/INTEL or Windows. Written in the C++ programming language the system's main features unclude: portability; maintainability; upward compatibility; and client-server architecture implementation. Abstract
Discusses the development of cataloguing rules for audiovisual media in Austria in recent years, and the publication of ÖNORM A 2653, which encapsulates these rules, in 1991. Describes the main features of these rules; the concept of the audiovisual underlining them; their inclusion of unpublished material; the presence of content analysis in the bibliographic description, and the fact that they are aimed at computer cataloguing

    Abstract
Report of the International Conference on the Principles and Future Development of AACR, 23-25 Oct 1997, Toronto. This conference examined cataloguing principles and rules in light of both description and access within the framework of library catalogues. In particular it focused on bibliographic and authority records and the usability of the library catalogue

    Abstract
This article identifies the types of publications containing maps and the need for access to maps contained in them. The emphasis is on older maps; the comments are opposite for cataloging of current maps. The needs of map users are discussed, identifying the points of access that are critical to successful map retrieval. Main entry for maps is discussed. Various categories of associated map and book items are identified, and suggestions made, with USMARC examples, as to how these maps might be treated by the cataloger

    Abstract
OCLC's Internet Resources Project investigated the nature of electronic textual information available through remote Internet access, focusing on the practical and theoretical problems associated with creating MARC records. Details the project methods and results. The findings reveal aspects of electronic information objects available via the Internet, provide a taxonomy of the file types available via FTP, and a substantive body of data on the suitability of conventional methods for providing bibliographic description and access for Internet information objects. Makes recommendations for cataloguing Internet resources

    Abstract
Remote-sensing images are valuable library resources, which provide highly useful information to a variety of library patrons. They are graphic representations of spatial relationships recorded by a device that was not in physical contact with the geographic entity being studied. Effective access and description in the library catalog is necessary so that these images may be found and used. This article discusses characteristics of remote-sensing images and maps: how to identify them; and how to catalog, classify and provide subject access for them. A variety of remote-sensing items and their catalog records are reproduced and discussed, including application of the new Remote-sensing 007 field.

    Abstract
This article defines and outlines the characteristics of map series, map sets, map serials, maps in multiple editions and multi-sheet single maps. Brief instructions on sources of information and general methodology used in gathering information prior to creating the entry are presented. The different methods which may be used for cataloguing series and serials are explored. There is also a brief section on cataloguing bi- and multi-lingual works in a bilingual environment. For each relevant area of description, instructions and examples are given to illustrate problems. Sections on analysis (including multi-level cataloguing).

    Abstract
In the context of machine readable cataloging for national bibliographic databases, this paper describes the cataloging of monographic early printed maps whether published separately or extracted from other publications. It deals with description and access to capture the essence of a rare or ''antique'' map to create a useful surrogate. The step-by-step approach, rather than breaking new ground, integrates rules and guidance from multiple sources, both cataloging tools and supplementary materials, in a narrative fashion, with reference to the sources, their specific rules, and stated policies. Reference is made throughout the text to ten sample catalog records, with MARC 21 tagging, that are appended to the article.

    Abstract
With the transition from cartographic materials to spatial information the nature and amount of access data for the library field is changing. Besides bibliographic data there exists now a range of metadata, each kind for specific purposes within specific user fields. To define their relation to each other they have been put into a diagram. Through the Resource Description Framework these should all be available through a common interface for Internet-searching. To prevent confusion spatial metadata is defined. Spatial metadata introduces new elements to descriptions with new application possibilities.

    Abstract
Describes the progress amde to date towards the designing and accepting of international standards for archival description. The International Council on Archives (ICA) set up the Ad Hoc Commission on Archival Description (ICA/DDS) in 1990 and its Statement of Principles regarding Archival Description (the Madrid Principles) was received by the ICA at the International Congress on Archives in Montreal in 1992. Discusses these principles and their implications. Describes the General International Standard Archival Description, ISAD(G) and considers access points and authorities. Indicates future developments in the international dascription standards

    Abstract
Libraries can add value to Internet resources by adding them to the library's catalogue in a manner consistent with the other resources held within the collection. Reports on OCLC studies into cataloguing Internet resources and accessing electronic periodicals. Existing retrieval methods on the Internet are limited because of shallow directory structures and idiosyncratic naming conventions. Catalogue entries for electronic resources need to provide a complete description of the access methodology if they are to satisfactorily connect remote users without the immediate possibility of backup from reference staff

    Abstract
It is helpful and essential to adopt standards for bibliographic information, project description and institutional information which are shareable for access to information resources within a country. Describes a strategy for adopting international standards of bibliographic information exchange for developing a resource sharing facilitation database in India. A list of 22 ISO standards for information processing is included

    Abstract
Taylor intends this book to be preparatory to traditional texts on cataloging and classification. She reviews why and how recorded information is organized in libraries, archives, museums, and art galleries. She then turns to the methods of retrieving information, such as through bibliographies and catalogs, and methods of encoding information (e.g., MARC and SGML), the metadata related to description and access, subject analysis by means of words, and classification as a further means of subject access. A chapter on systems for information storage and retrieval concludes a book that well fills the need for a single-volume introduction on its subject.

    Abstract
Examines the goals of bibliographic control, subject analysis and their relationship for audiovisual materials in general and multipart videotape recordings in particular. Concludes that intellectual access to multipart works is not adequately provided for when these materials are catalogues in collective set records. An alternative is to catalogue the parts separately. This method increases intellectual access by providing more detailed descriptive notes and subject analysis. As evidenced by the large number of records in the national database for parts of multipart videos, cataloguers have made the intellectual content of multipart videos more accessible by cataloguing the parts separately rather than collectively. This reverses the traditional cataloguing process to begin with subject analysis, resulting in the intellectual content of these materials driving the bibliographic description. Suggests ways of determining when multipart videos are best catalogued as sets or separately
