    Abstract
    Presents a model for an electronic book (hyper-book). Hyper-books are electronic books defined on the basis of the paper book metaphor. Gives a formal definition of the hyper-book model as a dynamic system. The model was implemented in a working system, and evaluated with a group of users. The evaluation has confirmed that the adoption of the book metaphor is very effective, as it guarantees ease of using and understanding the system

    Abstract
    To make their system quickly usable, designers often build interfaces that reflect well-known manual activities. Demonstrates how undergraduates use their mental models for print encyclopedias to develop minimal proficiency with various electronic encyclopedias. Lower performance levels in the electronic systems are due to additional cognitive load required to adapt and develop mental models for the new systems. For the fact retrieval questions used in these relativley small data bases, the hypertext encyclopedia required less cognitive load than the 2 traditional Boolean-based systems. Adaptive designs that provide multiple system images are encouraged to support more comprehensive user understanding and more varied tasks

    Abstract
    The primary purpose of the study was to identify motivations for hyperlinking in scholarly electronic articles. Fifteen Indiana University faculty and graduate students who had published at least one scholarly electronic article containing at least one external hyperlink were surveyed. Through a series of qualitative interviews, 19 different hyperlinking motivations, classified into the three motivational groups -scholarly, social, and technological-along the dimensional ranges of their properties, were identified. The vast majority of the hyperlinks were attributed to more than one motivation by the authors. The empirical findings of the study demonstrated that scholars use hyperlinks for a variety of purposes, and that their hyperlinking behavior frequently results from a complex interplay of motivations

    Traditional hypertext adds structure to electronic documents by linking related concepts. This hypertext is normally produced by the author that specialises in the production of electronic documents. Describes a system, ConQuest, that eliminates the need for hypertext produced by authors. ConQuest is a natural language, concept based text search, retrieval and browsing engine that automatically finds related concepts in a document using linguistic processing and a built in lexical knowledge base.     Abstract
    The US Marine Corps has developed an information storage retrieval system, On-line Books that gives remote access to the complete text of the Marine Corps University war-fighting collection. Searching is through hypertext capabilities and document delivery via mailed printouts or electronic mail. Central to the system is the storage machine a main-frame attached, optical disc based network archive searver developed by File Tek Inc. Its main architectural components are: a channel network interface, a storage and transfer processor, a layered storage hierarchy composed of magnetic disc, multiple terabytes of optical discs mounted in a robotic library and shelf storage.     Abstract
    Pierian Press and the University of Illinois have been experimenting with directly parsing classified, analytical bibliographies into an electronic structure using the respective strengths of both HTML and MARC. This structure, which is explained and illustrated in this article, mitigates the weaknesses of each standard by drawing on the strengths of the other. The resulting electronic knowledge constructs can be mounted on local library systems and function as dynamic maps onto a specified subset of resources on those systems.     Abstract
    The OtaOnline project at the Helsinki University of Technology, Finland, has been deploying the distribution of Finnish newspapers such as Iltalehti, Aamulehti and Kauppalehi on the Internet since 1994. The editors produce the electronic counterpart of these papers by a conversion process from QuarkXpress documents to HTML. The project is about to introduce an approach which provides many new features. Describes an object-oriented approach which implements the logical model of a hypermedia newspaper. It encapsulates the structures of the hypermedia documents as well as their capability for transforming into different presentation formats. It also provides a semantical rating mechanism to be used with intelligent agents. Presents a distribution scheme which enables efficient use of this model
