- The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) has been developed by the academic technical and medical publishing sectors to enable the management of access rights to information published electronically. The DOI system has evolved from the physical documentary unit identifiers developed in the 1970, physical and document logical unit identifiers developed in the 1980s and recently modified to meet the needs of electronic distribution. - Records management has appeared lately in France to designate the management of organizational documents and electronic data an enterprise must retain as proof of its activities and transactions. An international standard is under discussion to address issues concerned with retention. - Bibliographic information adds value to primary documents by facilitating access to them. The extension of classic library catalogues to give access to electronic documents can be achieved by a single link as with the recent addition of a specific field to the MARC format. - For a published item be searched it has to conform to certain standards such as the recognition of the author and his rights, the registration of copyright and editorial format allowing a rational use of the book and access within a classification scheme. Considers whether this should be applied to video film publishing. - Abstract
- Describes the building of the Deutsche Bibliothek, inaugurated at Frankfurt on Main in May 1997. Its mission is to produce electronic documents from printed materials. It affers an online catalogue with a multimedia system and is accessible via the Internet. As a centre for national bibliography, it produces around 15 million records per year, both on and off-line. It comprises part of a network of European national libraries which aims to promote the creation of a European virtual library, the constitution of a depository library for digital documents and the definition of cataloguing standards for electronic documents. Access is compatible with systems used by other libraries and information centres. This programme permits the library to play an integrating role in ermany and to cooperate in international projects
