    Abstract
Discusses the results of a survey describing special librarian's use of the worldwide computer networks INTERNET and BITNET. Facilities available on INTERNET include electronic mail, computer conferencing, remote login ('telenet') to other libraries' catalogues and file transfer protocol (FTP) which allows the user to log to a remote host to tranfer files. The National Research and Education Network (NREN) is expected to develop over the next 5 years into a high-capacity fibre optic cable network that will link computer user in government, industry, academic, publishing, research and libraries
