    Abstract
Since the appearance of Diderot and D'Alembert's Encyclopedia in the 18th century, encyclopedias have undergone some modifications but until recently there have been no substantial alterations to the basic design established by the original authors. The emergence of massive data storage systems and sophisticated methods of information retrieval such as hypertext are bringing about considerable changes in the design of encyclopedias, especially as regards interactivity. Presents a critical evaluation of these new hypermedia encyclopedias, illustrating both their advantages and their weaknesses. Discusses the future of multimedia encyclopedia publishing

    Abstract
The key political and strategic issues which needs to be addressed for the future development of the Australian subject gateways are: continued quality of content creation, integration of access to print and electronic resources, archiving and persistent identification, sustainability of services and service integration. These issues will be more effectively tackled internationally, and the Australian subject gateways are keen to work with international collaborators to achieve a mutually beneficial outcome

    Abstract
Reports a survey of all academic members of the Association of Research Libraries in the 4th quarter of 1997 which examined how academic libraries incorporate electronic information sources into their reference activities and the effects on libraries services. There was a response rate of 68 per cent, Compares results surveys carried out in 1991 and 1994. The survey covered: numbers of computers access options (intermediary, end user online, CD-ROM locally loaded databases or those accessible through the library catalogue and the Internet. There is a trend away from print resources, particularly indexing and abstracting materials, and away from CD-ROM LANs and local loading of databases towards remote online resources

    Abstract
Updated version of an earlier edition which underlines, on the one hand, the growing importance of grey literature as an information source and the need for guidelines for its further exploitation and, on the other hand the many changes which are taking place, not least with respect to electronic publishing and the rise of the Internet and WWW. Individual chapters deal with specific issues, including: the nature and development of grey literature; grey literatur collections and methods of acquisition; bibliographic control; cataloguing and indexing; specialist means of distribution, microforms and the Internet; theses, translations and meetings papers; aerospace; life sciences; the European Community; education; energy; science and technology; keys to reports series codes; trade literature; and a list of useful addresses of organizations and contacts

    Abstract
Highlights some of the differences between printed and electronic materials; problems of preservation of initial texts, inaccessible formats, problems over the control of access and costs of electronic media. Libraries need to tackle issues that can ensure that their clients will have as unconstrained access to electronic information as they now have to printed information, and that electronic texts that are worth preserving are maintained

    Abstract
There is no generally agreed definition of reference publishing in the industry today. Identifies attributes which are more likely to be associated with reference publishing than with publishing of the non-reference sort, including comprehensiveness, objectivity, authoritativeness, strong reliance on brand names, a disinclination to pay royalties and the common strategy of internal product development. Reference publishers conceive their publications as existing in a larger information context, providing 'background'. discusses the use of computers in reference publishing, both in production, and in publishing itself, on CD-ROM or online. Argues that current CD-ROM reference works are not true reference works as they are used generally as a goreground activity, not as a source of background information. Sees the future of CD-ROM publishing as entertainment publishing and predicts that reference publishing will go online
