    Abstract
Discusses electronic information and organizational development, in particular that of competing companies in the commercial world. Explores the policy and managerial changes that will be needed to make full use of electronic information. Notes a number of new categories of electronic information of relevance to companies, and raises wide ranging issues of quality which will be increasingly pertinent, e.g. efficiency may require simpler and slower access to information, rather than faster and fuller. Information and information technology has to be worked into the internal political processes of companies. Concludes by noting a number of hindrances to this reengineering of companies, e.g. the way downsizing leads to demotivation

    Abstract
Large multinational corporations produce and acquire vast volumes of information in the course of their business. Information management strategies are being developed in many large organizations to manage this assett effectively, enabling the organization to achieve crucial business abjectives in addition to controlling costs. Electronic systems are being used to store the increasing volumes of information. Raises issues about the management of this information such as how the culture, organization and pace of change within the company affect the management of information, particularly this availability for use by third parties in the longer term

    Abstract
To facilitate information access and sharing, the World Bank began developing a Bankwide Enterprise Network in the early 1990s. The network, which was fully developed at the Bank's headquarters campus and some field offices at the end of 1995, enables Bankwide services, such as electronic document management, directory services, and Internet access. As the Bank began development of these services, it became clear that it required a comprehensive model for its future information management infrastructure. The model was necessary to provide infrastructure that could be built in an orderly and logical way - one that would be manageable, modular, scalable, and open. This paper discusses this model, developed by an interdisciplinary team, and its application to the Bank's evolving electronic document management system

    Abstract
Defines business information as any information needed by a company to carry out its business, and considers the demand for a wider range of such information resulting from the increasingly global nature of business activity, organisational interaction, and related economic, social and political changes. Provision by publishers of business information in paper and various electronic formats is growing together with increasing use of the Internet and Web sites by companies. This in turn emphasizes the need to open up information sources, and continue to demonstrate to top management the value of information strategies and personal networking

    Abstract
The best of organizations, in the process of growth and change, examine themselves continuously for fitness of purpose with regard to products, resources and services in order to discover more efficient ways of doing things. Describes the use of information technology to create new opportunities. Information management is a methodology for identifying all existing information resources within an organization whether in paper or electronic format. Understanding the value of information is a critical element in the overall process of managing information. Discusses core competencies of management development programmes. Offers examples from the public and voluntary sectors to illustrate the value and potency of information management

    Abstract
State of the art reviews coveruing a range of topics relating to small business information work, including: the relationship between small businesses and information sources and providers available to them; the use of information by small businesses; the state of the information technology adoption process by small businesses; and changes in small business information use. Concludes with a discussion about future research in the field and includes hypotheses about the impact of information access and technology on small businesses. Pays particular attention to the likely changes that are likely to take place in the small business environment, involving: telecommuting; and the electronic delivery of customized, timely environmental scanning information that will permit small businesses to function like big businesses. Decries the absence of effective links between small businesses and the information brokering world but sees small businesses taking advantage of some of the new lower cost online services that are being offered through the Internet

    Abstract
This research examines the changes that electronic information technologies have caused on power within organizations. Based on the strategic contingencies theory of intraorganizational power, a model of organizational power is developed and tested. Major features of the model include a technology index, subunit power variables, environmental variables, and bases of power variables (structure, coping with uncertainty, centrality, and substitutability). According to canonical correlation analyses, changes in library automation and changes in the environment are related to changes in both the bases of power variables and power itself. The bases of power, in turn, are related to changes in the power of the library as measured by the percent of the institutional budget allocated to the library, the number of library positions, and the perception of power

    Abstract
Reports results of the 7th annual survey of the use of business information in UK libraries, based on a questionnaire survey mailed in Jan 1998 to 817 libraries. The Internet is now a centrally important resource for nearly all UK business libraries and 90% of 1998 survey respondents are currently using it. While some end user services (Internet and CD-ROM) are being taken up, there is little evidence of penetration of end user online services in the organizations employing business librarians. After earlier fearing its consequences, business librarians now view end user access to the Internet with equanimity. Business reference departments in public libraries are facing a serious threat from the Internet. Business information budgets vary widely, from under 5.000 pounds to over 1 million pounds and the most common is the 5.000 to 24.999 pound range. Business libraries have espoused the information age and 50% spend at least half of their resources budgets on electronic data

    Abstract
The mission of the Information Services Department at Microsoft is to link users with information services and resources that facilitate Microsoft's product development, sales and support. This paper ia a discussion of how that mission is fulfilled by integrating Microsoft products, leveraging off of company product development and developing new information delivery systems to satisfy the individual information needs of employees world wide. Information Services is integrating its own products into the business of information retrieval and delivery. Included in the discussion is a description of the processing of an information request, beginning with how the employee makes the request, continuing with the routing of the request to the proper party within Information Services, the information retrieval procedure and the delivery mechanism utilized to present the completed information request to the employee. Using the company profile as an example, the steps in the process are reviewed, including generation of the request via electronic form, searching via communications software and networked CD-ROMs, downloading results and reformatting using various Microsoft Word macros and delivering the profile via an object package in Microsoft Mail over the corporate network. Future plans for information tools and workflow changes are also discussed
