Considers the reason why CD-ROM's promise of a large range of legal data bases has, to some extent, been limited. The new range of CD-ROM hypertext data bases, produced by West Publishing Company, are discussed briefly.

    Abstract
The development of electronic publishing heralds a new period in scientific communications. Besides the obvious advantages of an almost endless storage and transport capacity, many new features come to the fore. As each technology finds its own expressions in the ways scientific communication take form, we analyse print on paper scientific articles in order to obtain the necessary ingredients for shping a new model for electronic communications. A short historical overview shows that the typical form of the present-day linear (essay-type) scientific article is the result of a technological development over the centuries. The various characteristics of print on paper are discussed and the foreseeable changes to a more modular form of communication in an electronic environment are postulated. Subsequently we take the functions of the present-day scientific article vis-à-vis the author and the reader as starting points. We then focus on the process of scientific information transfer and deal essentially with the information consumption by the reader. Different types of information, at present intermingled in the linear article, can be separated and stored in well-defined, cognitive, textual modules. To serve the scientists better in finding their way through the information overload of today, we conclude that the electronic transfer of the future will be, in essence, a transfer of well-defined, cognitive information modules. In the last part pf this article we outline the first steps towards a heuristic model for such scientific information transfer

    Abstract
The lack of complete and accurate citations for referenced works is a persistent and significant problem in scholarly writing. The advent of new froms of electronic publishing, especially hypermedia, has the potential for either aggravating or alleviating this problem. Incorrect and missing citations will become more prevalent (and, indeed, have become so within large bibliographic databases) without a concerted and ccoperative effort on the part of systems developers to provide adequate references and the means for easily accessing and downloading them. Examines some of the basic issues involved in the problem of maintaining the critical authorship links between source and expression in one specific form of electronic publishing - hypermedia - and proposes some solutions

    Abstract
The primary purpose of the study was to identify motivations for hyperlinking in scholarly electronic articles. Fifteen Indiana University faculty and graduate students who had published at least one scholarly electronic article containing at least one external hyperlink were surveyed. Through a series of qualitative interviews, 19 different hyperlinking motivations, classified into the three motivational groups -scholarly, social, and technological-along the dimensional ranges of their properties, were identified. The vast majority of the hyperlinks were attributed to more than one motivation by the authors. The empirical findings of the study demonstrated that scholars use hyperlinks for a variety of purposes, and that their hyperlinking behavior frequently results from a complex interplay of motivations

    Abstract
The convergence of different fields, regrouping computer networks, multimedia, hypertext and new powerful software interfaces bring fresh approaches to the production, cataloguing and access of electronic documents. Hypertext organization brings the possibility of reading the document or navigating in a non-linear fashion. This will fundamentally alter reading, writing and publishing in future generations
