- Abstract
- A recent survey at the Royal Library in the Netherlands showed that subject headings are more efficient than title keywords for retrieval purposes. 475 Dutch publications were selected at random and assigned subject headings. The study showed that subject headings provided additional useful information in 56% of titles. Subsequent searching of the library's online catalogue showed that 88% of titles were retrieved via subject headings against 57% through title keywords. Further precision may be achieved with the help of indexing staff, but at considerable cost

- Abstract
- In May 80 the joint working parties on the Dutch National Bibliography and the Dutch National Bibliographical Centre published their final report containing proposals for a national bibliography in the Netherlands based on Brinkmann's catalogue of books. In view of the limited number of terms used in the subject index of Brinkmann's catalogue it was proposed to adopt the thesaurus of headings developed by the Netherlands Bibliotheek en Lektuur Centrum with the addition of UDC and SISO classification numbers to each entry. A test-run has identified a core of some 3.500 headings which will be input into the database to provide a subject index to the bibliography. The system will become operational on 1 Jan 81

- Amstelveen Public Library in the Netherlands introduced the online Kid's Catalog in 1997 to enable young users to access the library's catalogue. The system was developed in the United States and has been translated into Dutch for use in Amstelveen. The system enables users to access the catalogue through a menu of icons or by typing in author, title and subject headings. The system can recognise typing errors and offer corrected headings. - Abstract
- A survey of catalogue use in 1993 at Utrecht University in the Netherlands showed considerable dissatisfaction with the online catalogue's subject search facilities. Of those who used subject searching 64% preferred subject headings against only 2% who chose classification schedules. Library users make little use of the existing facilities for assistance and leaflets which are available in the library. It has, therefore, been decided to provide a programme of instruction in library use and to move towards a unified system of subject access to the library's catalogue

- A study of the online catalogues of major academic libraries and databases in the Netherlands shows considerable variation in the form of name used for the author W.F. Hermans. The problem lies with a lack of authority control in headings used in the Dutch national union Pica catalogue. - Abstract
- In the Netherlands dissatisfaction with the classification schedules and subject indexing headings assigned to records by the National Bibliographic Service has led librarians to re-arrange their collections in broad reader-interest categories. With the introduction of online public catalogues in libraries and their provision of multiple entry terms for each item, the problems of conflictions in shelf location are largely eliminated. The internal layout of each library may place constraints on such radical reorganisation. Howver, the merging of the children's and adults' sections can be useful in offering children a greater depth of knowledge. A further useful arrangement may be the combination of fiction and non-fiction collections in broad subject catalogues

- The universal classification schemes developed in the 19th century are a direct response to the social changes of that era. However, the increasing use of automation in libraries has highlighted the need fir greater precision in hierarchical structures. A thesaurus of used and related headings can be employed to show the spatial relationship of semantic terms. The resulting search profile can be further enhanced by the addition of citation weighting. - Abstract
- In the Netherlands and Belgium some 50 documentation centres on women's affairs have been created in recent years, ranging from small voluntary centres through university departmental collections to regional and national centres. Increased interest in women's affairs resulted in a joint project by the International Informatiecentrum an Archief voor de Vrouwenbeweging and the Anna Maria van Schuurman Centre to create a thesaurus of indexing terminlogy. Work began in 1988 and the final version was published in 1992. The thesaurus contains some 2.200 terms and 700 references and includes a permuterm index of headings. The IIAV in Amsterdam has accepted responsibility for maintaining the thesaurus
