    Abstract
The OCLC Authority File is one of the most underused and underrated yet most powerful tool for answering reference questions. It provides the benefits of no cost searching, access to a wealth of biographical and geographical information online, increased staff productivity by reducing research time, multiple cross reference access points, and documenting sources used to verify the information. The flexible searching protocol and the consolidation in one record of both the authorized and all variant forms for personal, corporate, and geographical names, subject headings, and uniform titles (created by the Library of Congress and the National Coordinated Cataloguing Operations (NACO)) mean that searchers need know only one of the forms to retrieve the established heading

    Abstract
North American newspaper headings in 1992 and 1993 gave the concept of 'family' a great deal of coverage. The debate over 'family values', the Family Leave Bill in the US Congress, and the furor over 'Nannygate' converged together to put the spotlight on families and related topics. Family studies (sometimes called family science) is a broad category, covering diverse fields of study and practice such as family therapy, family sociology, family psychology, social work, population studies, anthropology, family law and other disciplines

    Abstract
One of the problems in assessing the success of a local library in meeting the needs of a local community has been that of visualising where its readers live. The library data file listing borrowers will have as one of its items the borrower's address and in smaller communities the librarian may have some idea as to whether or not demand for the library's services were evenly distributed. In larger communities this would be more difficult. This paper describes the use of a geographic information system to use the addresses in borrower database of the Armidale City Public Library to map the spatial distribution of its borrowers. Using this technique it is possible to identify areas of high and low use.

    Abstract
Analyses 5 articles on subjects of bibliographic interest in the 1st ed. (1751-80) of Encyclopedie, now re-issued in facsimile form. The article headings (translated) are Bibliomane, Bibliomania, Librarian, Library, and Catalogue. The relevant authors include Diderot, d'Alembert and David, among others. By identifying likely sources, the analysis throws light on library science developments in the early 18th century. D'Alembert's contribution, in particular, contains the seeds of the modern view of what libraries ought not to be

    Abstract
2nd part of an examination of the poor state of reference materials in libraries. Looks at ways that electronic information services, which provide access to information rather than ownership, can ease some of the problems of lack of reference resources. Careful cooperative planning is needed to make the best of theses resources. Libraries could also establish reference pools of printed publications in order to provide maximum reference information access

    Abstract
Reports 5 key results of a questionnaire survey comparing the use of internal and external information services by business persons in the City of Brisbane, Queensland. The 'Business information: an investigation of its sources and use survey' was undertaken on behalf of Queensland University of Technology Library's (QUT) Expert Information Service. The survey aimed to determine where and how business information is currently sourced, how often and why information is sought from any particular source and any problems users have in finding business information

    Abstract
The Oxford English Dictionary is the authoritative dictionary of the English language. The machine-readable format utilising optical technology, duplicates the 1933 edition and provides enhanced access to more than 42 million words, 252.259 entries, and 1,86 million quotations. Examines advantages and problems of electronic access to the dictionary through the medium of CD-ROM, as well as public service implications within the context of a reference department in a research-oriented library. Describes the merits of the second edition of OED, which was published in Spring 89.

    Abstract
Contribution to an issue devoted on the weeding and maintenance of reference collections. CD-ROM has become part of the library universe and increasing numbers of libraries are considering the acquisition of reference tools in the new format. Issues of evaluation and selection, hardware purchase, and budget are primary concerns in this decision. Many aspects of day-to-day maintenance and access to CD-ROM sources must also be considered in the evaluation process. These issue-space, security, the care and feeding of hardware and software, reference assistance, staffing and staff training, and user instruction are vital to the success of CD-ROM in the library. Focuses particularly on literature about training for staff and users.

    Abstract
Reports a survey of all academic members of the Association of Research Libraries in the 4th quarter of 1997 which examined how academic libraries incorporate electronic information sources into their reference activities and the effects on libraries services. There was a response rate of 68 per cent, Compares results surveys carried out in 1991 and 1994. The survey covered: numbers of computers access options (intermediary, end user online, CD-ROM locally loaded databases or those accessible through the library catalogue and the Internet. There is a trend away from print resources, particularly indexing and abstracting materials, and away from CD-ROM LANs and local loading of databases towards remote online resources

    Abstract
The large number and variety of online databases in the field of environment sciences and chemistry underlies the need for a cooperative evaluation approach. Presents 2 evaluation criteria, divided into 4 headings; general criteria (size of data source, cost of 1 hour searching, updating of database, availability on other media); chemical relevant criteria (number of chemicals, identification parameters of chemicals, test set chemicals, development of chemicals), environmental relevant criteria (information parameters for chemicals, parameter development); and criteria describing environmental chemicals (use of chemicals, quality of database). A 6 number scoring system is applied to these criteria and the Hasse diagram technique is presented for 19 bibliographic online databases using these criteria. Using this technique, 'good' and 'bad' databases are identified and changes in the database content from 1995 to 1998 can be visualized

    Abstract
Surveys the terrain and charts the strengths and weaknesses of atlases in print and CD-ROM format using the following criteria: the degree of information conveyed in the maps; ease of understanding of and access to the information; accuracy of the information; and expected aesthetic and physical properties of the format
