    Abstract
The status of indexing as a science is much disouted on the grounds that it depends essentially on the subjective view of the indexer. Given an epistemological perspective, however, this argument cannot be sustained. Indexing, like all modern sciences, has clearly defined objectives (e.g. the Unesco definition) and methods (identification of the indexing phrase, then translation into the indexing language), and the outcome can be evaluated in terms of specific criteria (effectiveness, efficiency, value)
