- Abstract
- This book is an essay on the epistemology of classifications. Its main purpose is not to provide an exposition of an actual mathematical theory of classifications, that is, a general theory which would be available to any kind of them: hierarchical or non-hierarchical, ordinary or fuzzy, overlapping or not overlapping, finite or infinite, and so on, establishing a basis for all possible divisions of the real world. For the moment, such a theory remains nothing but a dream. Instead, the authors are essentially put forward a number of key questions. Their aim is rather to reveal the "state of art" of this dynamic field and the philosophy one may eventually adopt to go further. To this end they present some advances made in the course of the last century, discuss a few tricky problems that remain to be solved, and show the avenues open to those who no longer wish to stay on the wrong track. Researchers and professionals interested in the epistemology and philosophy of science, library science, logic and set theory, order theory or cluster analysis will find this book a comprehensive, original and progressive introduction to the main questions in this field.

- Abstract
- This book brings together contemporary facet theory research to propose mapping sentences as a new way of understanding complex behavior, and suggests future directions the approach may take. How do we think about the worlds we live in? The formation of categories of events and objects seems to be a fundamental orientation procedure. Facet theory and its main tool, the mapping sentence, deal with categories of behavior and experience, their interrelationship, and their unification as our worldviews. In this book Hackett reviews philosophical writing along with neuroscientific research and information form other disciplines to provide a context for facet theory and the qualitative developments in this approach. With a variety of examples, the author proposes mapping sentences as a new way of understanding and defining complex behavior.

- Abstract
- Most Likely, this revision of Cataloguing Theory and Practice 6th Edition by Professor C.G. Viswanathan has the distinction of commanding continued use since 1954, both in India and abroad . Besides providing a comprehensive and balanced perspective of library catalogues from Collimates to AACR-2 1988 revision, enabling students and the faculty of library and information science at universities, and practicing cataloguers towards rationalization, the work projects an analysis of pros and cons of continuing the cataloguing procedures and techniques and maintaining it in the traditional form of cards filed in cabinet or to adopt the MARC techniques, and computerise it online with the advanced countries of the West. The impact of computerisation on the users, library staff and library administration with regard to its cost effectiveness has been discussed. Two new chapters. Computerised Catalogue (chapter-8) and Headings for Name Entries (Chapter-26) according to AACR2, 1988 revision has been added. The data and been brought to date. A brief account of the British Library's Cataloguing Conversion Project of the British Museum's General Catalogue to Machine Readable From presents an exciting experience. The Library of Congress MARC System has also been given due consideration. The select working bibliography of a cataloguer has also been revised. he order of the chapters has been, as in previous editions, retained. It is expected that the sixth edition of Cataloguing Theory and Practice' would command the same respect of the author's colleagues, as justify its value as an unfailing companion in all cataloguing assignments.

- Abstract
- Cognitive load theory (CLT) is one of the most important theories in educational psychology, a highly effective guide for the design of multimedia and other learning materials. This edited volume brings together the most prolific researchers from around the world who study various aspects of cognitive load to discuss its current theoretical as well as practical issues. The book is divided into three parts. The first part describes the theoretical foundations and assumptions of CLT, the second discusses the empirical findings about the application of CLT to the design of learning environments, and the third part concludes the book with discussions and suggestions for new directions for future research. - Information and meaning is the third book in a trilogy exploring the nature of information, intelligence and meaning. It begins by providing an overview of the first 2 works of the trilogy, then goes on to consider the meaning of meaning. This exploration leads to a theory of how the brain works.
