- Abstract
- Information heuristics are concerned with the optimal strategies for information retrieval. The retrieval process is split into stages and the best methods of accomplishing each stage are described. The choice of an optimum retrieval strategy depends on the search subject, access methods and available retrieval tools. Information heuristics was introduced in the 1980s to the curriculum of Warsaw University library studies department to teach students general information retrieval methods and the knowledge necessary to find the best retrieval strategies

- Discusses the necessity of providing new methods of research into user information retrieval behaviour. Notes that the user using the catalogue via the Internet and communicating exclusively with the computer system, disappears from the librarian's direct view. Implementing adequate software facilities in some sense broadens research prospects and improves its quality.
