    Abstract
Describes the background to a research project being undertaken at Charles Stuart University, New South Wales. The project entitled 'Using graphic displays to build mental models for effective subject searching of the online catalogue' investigates a method for enhancing the user's understanding of the subject access system of an online catalogue to improve searching performance. Discusses the rationale and theoretical framenwork for the study, considers the application of mental models theory to the research project and visualization in information retrieval, and examines related research and what is known and unknown about the topic

    Abstract
The library, centre of the local network of educational, social and cultural establishments, introduced its multimedia catalogue in 1994. Records assessed by graphic interfaces include all documents and supports: users can call up accompanying text, images, audiovisual extracts, using a series of simple menus. For the librarians, maintaining the catalogue, converting documents into digital form and creating links is time consuming and needs special skills, but the impact on collection use and enhancement of the library's image are considerable, while the availability of digital copies helps conserve fragile documents

    Abstract
Menu selection systems reduce training and memorization, simplify entry of choices, and structure the user's task. However, the use of menu selection is no guarantee that novices or experts will be satisfied or able to carry out their work. This article focuses on the multiple design issues in creating successful menu selection systems. These include the primary issue of semantic organization and the host of secondary issues such as response time and display rates, shortcuts for frequent users, titles, phrasing of menu items, graphic layout, and selection mechanisms. Novel approaches such as popup menus and embedded menus are covered. Experimental results and design guidelines are presented

    Abstract
Difficulties with 'wayfinding' are common among users of electronic information systems. A study of strategies (textual, graphic, colour) for cuing users to their location in a data base showed that the presence or absence of physical cues was less important to successful searching than the user's abibiliy to represent internally the structure of the information. Users with more detailed and complete impressions of the data base searched faster. But the variety of different representations of the data base suggest it may be very difficult to create generic models as help to novice users

    Abstract
Describes the technical aspects of a feasibility study to test a new concept in bibliographic control based on the manifestations of a work. Conventional catalogues are based on the main entry principle which follows from the concept that there should be 1 main entry for each work. The Bradford OPAC project, at Bradford University, UK, aimed to develop a new type of hierarchical bibliographic record structure to cope with the problem of applying the main entry principle to multiple cataloguing records which are manisfestations of the same work. The project involved the storage of MARC data sets of bibliographic records, taken from the Bradford University Library OPAC and the OCLC WorldCat database, in a relational database (MS Access) on a PC. This was then used for an experimental Windows based OPAC, to evaluate the overall success of the idea and any problem areas identified with a view to a more substantial study. The project also aimed to test whether intelligent and responsive software, using a graphic user interface and based on sets of manifestations, could provide a better route to information than a display based on a single work

    Abstract
Presents a study questioning catalogue users at Emporia State Univ. about their experiences and their evaluation of NOTIS in order to access how patrons felt about the catalogue and how well they used it. The study focused on the instruction offered by 59 randomly selected NOTIS libraries. Responses were solicited concerning the university or college, the library, and training methods for OPAC users. With the information gained through both parts, the library instruction program and information regarding NOTIS at White Library could be evaluated and modified

    Abstract
Analyses the technical features of the 5 main search fields of the OPAC run by Bologna University's interlibrary centre (CIB), part of the National Library Service (SBN). The CIB links about 100 academic and civil library collections on the humanities, social sciences, and science subjects. With the aid of Home Page / Helpline displays, examines how OPAC search procedures are carried out by author, title, subject, ISBN, or single library. Also explains the data filtering methods used. The CIB will soon broaden its OPAC search strategies by adopting the Florence University library OPAC research structure

    Abstract
Discusses evaluation and methods of evaluation of OPACs in the context of user orientated qualitative research. Provides a state of the art review of experimental approaches and analytical data gathering methods applied to on-line catalogues and appropriate evalutative criteria. Suggests the development of more effective diagnostic, monitoring and prototyping tools.

    Abstract
Discusses some of the methods of subject access to on-line catalohues (OPACs) and argues that none are entirley satisfactory. Describes 2 methods for improving subject access: best match searching; and automatic query expansion application and discusses their feasibility. Mentions emerging application standards for information retrieval and concludes that existing standards are incompatible with most methods for improving standards
