    Abstract
The MARC Program of the Library of Congress, led during its formative years by the author of this entry, was a landmark in the history of automation. Technical procedures, standards, and formatting for the catalog record were experimented with and developed in modern form in this project. The project began when computers were mainframe, slow, and limited in storage. So little was known then about many aspects of automation of library information resources that the MARC project can be seen as a pioneering effort with immeasurable impact.

    Abstract
Contrasts early in house automation efforts, such as the development of the MARC format and bibliographic utilities, with the creation of databases by abstracting and indexing services. Concludes that today's attempts to provide unified bibliographic access to the library's entire collection must find ways to integrate this plethora of independently developed access tools

    Abstract
31 papers consider the major international bodies concerned with standards and the problems associated with special forms and different scripts. The creation of bibliographic records including the role of national bibliographic agencies is considered. Standards for subject access and the impact of automation are also covered

    Abstract
Despite the extensive use of automation for archive management the creation of ISAD(G) (General International Standard Archival Description) was only accepted in January 1992. A special adaptation of the ISBD had already enabled a start to be made on creating MARC format records for archive collections. ISAD(G) will facilitate the exchange of data among collections. Whether the new standard will be suitable for all forms of archive depends on the willingness of archivists to adopt new technology

    Abstract
MARC (Machine Readable Cataloguing) format has been widely used and discussed in the library profession. However, there appear to have a wide spread misunderstanding of its real structure and attributes. Discusses the need for use to understand it a little more. Presents the general misconceptions about MARC, the structure of MARC format. In this library automation age, MARC is a key element in library services, and it deserves another look.
