    Presents a conceptual model for hypermedia systems that, among ohter features, supports versioning, permits exploring and managing alternate configurations, maintains document histories, supports cooperative work and provides automatic propagation of version changes.     Abstract
    Defines and explores the use of problem solving heuristics in user interface design. A demonstration hypertext system, Hyperwriter, was developed as the outcome of considering general problems solving heuristics as goals of interactive systems design. Whereas hypertext joins and relates ideas, Hyperwriter additionally, and as a direct outcome of the design approach, has ways of separating, ordering and polishing ideas as an application for creative writing.     Shows the possibilities that exist to create a basic hypertext interface for a thesaurus management system. The project has been built in 3 stages: conceptual data model for the thesaurus; development of the management tools, that is, the thesaurus management system; and the hypertext interfaces. The system has been developed on Windows and combines the power of relational database management systems and the navigational flexibility of Guide, a hypertext shell. presents 2 interface models.     Abstract
    Criticizes the current processes of information management, with the objective of arriving at a new concept of the electronic document. Discusses problems of human language in the context of information management. Examines the problem of information from the point of view of the structure of knowledge, by analysing dysfunction in current processes of information management. Proposes a model of knowledge nearer to the human mind called 'document hypertext'. A combined interface of information management id also applicable in studies of hardware, graphic interfaces and metaphors of visualization of information.     Abstract
    To make their system quickly usable, designers often build interfaces that reflect well-known manual activities. Demonstrates how undergraduates use their mental models for print encyclopedias to develop minimal proficiency with various electronic encyclopedias. Lower performance levels in the electronic systems are due to additional cognitive load required to adapt and develop mental models for the new systems. For the fact retrieval questions used in these relativley small data bases, the hypertext encyclopedia required less cognitive load than the 2 traditional Boolean-based systems. Adaptive designs that provide multiple system images are encouraged to support more comprehensive user understanding and more varied tasks

    Abstract
    The success of hypertext as an information system will depend on its usability. Hypertext systems have mostly been built as research prototypes and paid little attention to user interface usability. Reports experiments conducted to measure the usabiliy of 6 well-known hypertext systems. The 1st experiment measures authoring speed and the 2nd browsing speed for novice users. Results show that the easiest systems to use, for novices, are those with the simplest models. Factors such as a high information band width (multiple card displays), an uncluttered sreen and simple interaction also contribute to usability. For authoring, NoteCards emerging as statistically faster than other systems

    Abstract
    Concept mapping has a history of use in many disciplines as a formal or semi formal diagramming technique. Concept maps have an abstract structure as type hypergraphs, and computer support for concept mapping can associate visual attributes with node types to provide an attractive and consistent appearance. Computer support can also provide interactive interfaces allowing arbitrary actions to be associated with nodes such as hypermedia links to other maps and documents. Describes a general concept mapping system that is open architecture for integration with other systems, scriptable to support arbitrary interactions and computations, and customizable to emulate many styles of map. The system supports collaborative development of concept maps across local area and wide area networks, and integrates with WWW in both client helper and server gateway roles. A number of applications are illustrated ranging through education, artificial intelligence, active documents, hypermedia indexing and concurrent engeneering. Concept maps should be regarded as basic components of any hypermedia system, complementing text and images with formal and semi-formal active diagrams

    Abstract
    Explores the hypothesis that using a zooming graphical interface minimizes user disorientation when reading documents in an electronic environment. 36 graduate students at the University of Maryland at College Park, USA, were randomly assigned to read a hypertext document in either Pad++, a zooming graphical interface, or Mosaic, a jump-based interface. Questionnaires, observation, and taped interviews were used to compare and evalutae the use of the 2 interfaces with regard to learning time, performance and user satisfaction. Findings suggest as workstations become more powerful, a hybrid interface that adds continuous zooming to the existing mechanisms of scroll, pan and jump will emerge
