    Abstract
The workshop covered a wide range of issues, including data visualisatio, applications of computer graphics and virtual reality, formal models of user interfaces, and evaluation methods for designers of database user interfaces. The authors come from a wide variety of research backgrounds, which span both the DBMS and HCI fields. Interfaces to Database Systems is unique in that it brings together different approaches from the database and HCI communities. It will provide essential reading for researchers in database systems, and also industrial developers of DBMS

    Abstract
Despite the volume of research carried out into the design of database systems and the design of user interfaces, there is little cross-fertilization between the two areas. The control of user interfaces to database systems is, therfore, significantly less advanced than other aspects of DBMS design. As database functionality is used in a wider range of areas, such as design applications, the suitability of the user interface is becoming increasingly important. It is, therefore, necessary to begin applying the knowledge developed by HCI resaerchers to the specialised domain of database systems

    Abstract
Visual Interfaces to Digital Libraries exploit the power of human vision and spatial cognition to help individuals mentally organize and electronically access and manage large and complex information spaces. They draw on progress in the field of information visualization and seek to shift the users' mental load from slow reading to faster perceptual processes such as visual pattern recognition.Based on two workshops, the book presents an introductory overview as well as a closing listing of the top ten problems in the area by the volume editors. Also included are 16 thoroughly reviewed and revised full papers organized in topical sections on visual interfaces to documents, document parts, document variants, and document usage data; visual interfaces to image and video documents; visualization of knowledge domains; cartographic interfaces to digital libraries; and a general framework.

    Abstract
This collection of research papers provides extensive information on deploying services, concepts, and approaches for using open linked data from libraries and other cultural heritage institutions. With a special emphasis on how libraries and other cultural heritage institutions can create effective end user interfaces using open, linked data or other datasets. These papers are essential reading for any one interesting in user interface design or the semantic web.

    Abstract
This paper describes the coming together of two independent programmes developing interfaces which improves access to databases. MenUSE - Menu-based User Search Engine - has been developed to search bibliographic databases whilst HIBROWSE - High Resolution Interface for Database Specific BROWsing and SEarching - is a front-end for searching information stored on structured relational database management systems. Combining the 2 approaches affords the user much greater access capabilities than is possible using traditional retrieval systems. The implications of this are explored in the context of EPOQUE (the European Parliament Online QUEry system) and INSPEC

    Abstract
Information retrieval (IR) is a complex human activity supported by sophisticated systems. Information science has contributed much to the design and evaluation of previous generations of IR system development and to our general understanding of how such systems should be designed and yet, due to the increasing success and diversity of IR systems, many recent textbooks concentrate on IR systems themselves and ignore the human side of searching for information. This book is the first text to provide an information science perspective on IR. Unique in its scope, the book covers the whole spectrum of information retrieval, including: history and background information; behaviour and seeking task-based information; searching and retrieval approaches to investigating information; interaction and behaviour information; representation access models; evaluation interfaces for IR; interactive techniques; web retrieval, ranking and personalization; and, recommendation, collaboration and social search multimedia: interfaces and access. A key text for senior undergraduates and masters' level students of all information and library studies courses, this book is also useful for practising LIS professionals who need to better appreciate how IR systems are designed, implemented and evaluated.

    Abstract
Discussions and presentations dealt with attempts to clarify the different concepts in multimedia, object-oriented methods for multimedia, multimedia from psychological perspectives, synchronization problems in multimedia, ccoperative work using multimedia, multimedia interface builders, and so on. There was also a small exhibition presenting 4 different systems ranging from commercial products to research prototypes. The book is divided into 8 parts, on fundamentals, interaction, synchronization, demonstration presentations, cooperative work, information systems, multimedia systems and conclusions

    Abstract
With the ongoing digitization and virtualization of goods, services and living environments, information science reflects on the potential changes within the information society. While some parts of the community proclaim a revolutionary shift not only in the way we approach information and information systems, but also in the way society constitutes itself, other state that while the applications and interfaces adapt to advances in information technology, the underlying principles for human interactions with informations remain the same. In the ISI 2017 proceedings, contributions on the development of innovative information spaces and services, on analyses of human-computer interactions in physical or virtual inforamtion spaces and on the role of information science and its research endeavors are included.

    Abstract
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries, ECDL 2003, held in Trondheim, Norway in August 2003. The 39 revised full papers and 8 revised short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 161 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on uses, users, and user interfaces; metadata applications; annotation and recommendation; automatic classification and indexing; Web technologies; topical crawling and subject gateways; architectures and systems; knowledge organization; collection building and management; information retrieval; digital preservation; and indexing and searching of special documents and collection information.
